The New Cold War

Vladimir Putin has promised to target more missiles at the US if America deploys new weapons to Europe in the wake of Washington’s withdrawal from a key arms pact. 

In his toughest remarks yet on a potential new arms race, Putin said Russia would deploy more missiles if the Trump administration put short or intermediate range missiles in Europe – after the President’s decision this month to quit a treaty banning nuclear missiles with a range of less than 3,415 miles.

Putin said U.S. policy-makers, some of whom he said were obsessed with U.S. exceptionalism, should calculate the risks before taking any steps and said any new Russian missiles would target US ‘decision-making centres’.

He said: ‘It’s their right to think how they want. But can they count? I’m sure they can. Let them count the speed and the range of the weapons systems we are developing,’ Putin told Russia’s political elite to strong applause this morning.

‘Russia will be forced to create and deploy types of weapons which can be used not only in respect of those territories from which the direct threat to us originates, but also in respect of those territories where the centres of decision-making are located,’ he said.

Putin also boasted about Russia’s expanding array of new weapons and said it will deploy a new hypersonic missile for its navy as part of efforts to counter what he described as hostile U.S. Moves.

The new Zircon missile will fly at nine times of the speed of sound and have a range of 620 miles, he warned, adding that the missile is designed to equip existing surface ships and submarines.

Other new weapons announced last year, including the nuclear-powered Burevestnik cruise missile and the Poseidon nuclear-powered underwater drone, have been undergoing tests successfully, he said.

Putin, facing an unprecedented fall in his approval ratings, made the remarks during his first address to both houses of parliament since he was elected to a fourth presidential term a year ago, extending his long rule until 2024.

In his toughest remarks yet on a potential new arms race, the Kremlin strongman warned the US against further missile deployments in Europe.

‘Russia does not intend to be the first to deploy such missiles in Europe,’ he said.

‘If (the US) develops and deploys them in Europe… this will dramatically exacerbate the international security situation, creating serious threats to Russia.

‘I’m saying this clearly and openly, Russia will be forced to deploy weapons that can be used… against the decision-making centres that are behind the missiles systems which threaten us.’

Putin said Russia was not seeking confrontation ‘particularly with such a global power as the U.S’.

But he added that Russia’s reaction to any deployment would be resolute and that U.S. policy-makers, some of whom he said were obsessed with U.S. exceptionalism, should calculate the risks before taking any steps.

‘It’s their right to think how they want. But can they count? I’m sure they can. Let them count the speed and the range of the weapons systems we are developing,’ Putin told Russia’s political elite to strong applause.

ACCIDENT reports and safety reviews into nuclear weapons and atomic energy programmes in Scotland are among hundreds of documents to have been suddenly withdrawn from public view.

According to a report on the Sunday Post website, following a “security review” the files at the National Archives in Kew were removed so that they can no longer be accessed by the public.

For me this is “very concerning”

The documents relate to a range of topics on Britain’s nuclear weapons and atomic energy programmes, including the nuclear power plant in Dounreay, Caithness, as well as Chapelcross in Dumfries and Galloway and the Hunterston A and Hunterston B power stations which are located in Ayrshire.

It is not entirely clear why the files have been removed.

All that is known at this point is that Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) ordered a security review and that a decision will be made on whether or not the documents should remain public.

The NDA, Ministry of Defence and the Atomic Weapons Establishment are jointly undertaking a security review to ensure that it is appropriate for the records to remain in the public domain,” a spokesperson said.

The NDA has indicated that the “vast majority” files will be made public again, according to the report.

“Just before Christmas all the files were withdrawn from the National Archive without any explanation or communication,” said Jon Agar, professor of science and technology studies at University College London

It was replaced with a message that if you need to see this, you have to put in an FOI request.

Almost everything we would want to know on the public record which allows us to trace the history of nuclear establishments across the country have been essentially withdrawn from public sight.

Why Prep?

To those of you who have seen the importance of preparing and have a desire to keep your family safe during a disaster – congratulations.

Prepping is for those who are preparing for the unknown future, and for those who see the importance of having necessary items in place before a disaster strikes.

I hope this piece will give you the basic fundamental knowledge on how to start prepping, help you gain an understanding of why you need to have certain disaster supplies, and give insight on where to get certain supplies.

Those that are new to prepping should start with planning for a given disaster and then begin acquiring items for their basic needs.

The logic behind prepping is the same for those preparing for a short term disaster or a long term disaster.

That logic is: To be self-sufficient and have the ability to care for yourself and your family independently during an unforeseen disaster.

Creating a disaster check list will add another layer of disaster planning, and expedite the process of getting ready for a disaster, if one comes your way.

Disasters can strike quickly and without warning. Knowing what type of disasters could affect the area you live in will help you plan more thoroughly for the disaster.

Deciding on the type of disaster to prepare for will also determine the type of survival gear that is needed.

For example, if a person lives in an area prone to flash flooding and torrential downpours from thunderstorms, the items they choose would be different than survival items chosen for earthquake preparedness.

Typically, the best way to prepare for a disaster is to plan for the worst case scenario so that all areas are covered.

Many think this ideology is a bit excessive, but being completely prepared and self-sufficient for a given disaster is the reasoning behind prepping. It is a state of mind for many.

There are different types of preppers – the short term and the long term preppers. Short term preppers are those that want to be prepared for anywhere between 1 week-3 months.

It is common sense I would say, that every family have a short term food supply in the case that food routes are interrupted due to severe storms, or unforeseen circumstances.

For longer term needs preppers generally are planning for disasters that have a longer term effect, thus they plan for longer self-sufficiency in the event the disaster does occur.

Long term preppers have a short term supply to complement their long term supply.

A longer term food supply usually includes dehydrated foods, MRE’s, seeds, hand crank wheat grinders, and equipment to be used in a non-technological environment.

Disasters do not just happen to other people – they can happen to you, and they can happen to me.

As long as you are prepared for a given scenario, then you already have tools in place when you need it most.

According to some, prepping has become some sort of a social movement.

Preparing for a disaster and being self-sufficient has occurred for centuries.

It is nothing new. It is simply families trying to make the hard times easier.

Surviving SHTF

Nuclear warfare is not necessary to cause a breakdown of our society. You take a large city like London, Birmingham, Manchester or Leeds— their water supply comes from hundreds of miles away and any interruption of that, or food, or power for any period of time you’re going to have riots in the streets.

Our society is so fragile, so dependent on the interworking of things to provide us with the goods and services that you don’t need nuclear warfare to fragment us any more than the Romans needed it to cause their eventual downfall.

While some may consider such a discussion a waste of time, more and more people are coming to the conclusion that preparations of some sort are warranted in our current troubled environment — on many fronts.

Surviving Economic Collapse is about how much preparation individuals are willing to do and is usually in direct correlation to their belief that something catastrophic could happen, making life as we know it a much more difficult task.

It is a proven fact throughout history that when disruptions of any kind occur, those who made even the smallest preparations typically fare much better than those who gave no thought at all in this regard.

I want to share with you a list I have compiled of the things that could potentially happen — and that threaten our way of life in a small or large degree.

There is no way to predict these things, but anyone with common sense can see that the possibility is likely we could experience one or more of these events at some point in the future…

Any single event or combination of events could cause terrible and debilitating circumstances for a short or long period of time:

Natural disasters such as hurricanes, floods, tornados, volcanic eruptions, solar flares, earthquakes, and other geophysical events happen across our world daily.

There is the every present possibility of wars, nuclear wars, nuclear reactor meltdowns, and radiation fallout.

Then we have the coming financial meltdown (derivative, debt crisis, economic collapse and/or bond implosion) causing currencies to implode and governments to topple

There are problems with the exploration, delivery, or production of oil, the lifeblood of modern economies

We are seeing a spread of disease such as the Black Plague or a bird flu pandemic more and more often

We have frequent Power cuts

And you could even say that political anarchy or revolution is a possibility too.

Racial strife or civil war is on the cards that is for sure

Electromagnetic pulse events are in the news even more now.

With any of these scenarios listed above (and there is a host of others I have probably not even thought about), you could have localized, national, or global unrest and even war for an indefinite period of time depending on the scope and duration of the event(s).

An item that is not on the list — but could be equally devastating to individual families — is the loss of a job.

Losing a job can be a catastrophic event if one is not properly prepared. Most families find themselves living pay day to pay day with little in the way of savings and almost nothing in the way of preparations.

For years, I had brought up the issue of preparedness to a close friend of mine.

When I first started talking about it, my friend and his wife basically blew me off… but I kept bringing the topic up.

Eventually they thought it prudent to at least get some sort of food storage together. Their family was accustomed to an upper middle class income and living comfortably in suburbia with their three children…

About a year after making their food preparations, the breadwinner of the family lost his job and ended up working a series of almost minimum wage jobs trying to make ends meet.

He kept applying for better-paying jobs in his field of expertise — but no matter how qualified he was nobody was interested in hiring someone at his previous salary level or his age (late fifties).

The family’s lifestyle was devastated and they eventually lost their home…

In a recent conversation with this friend, he told me that without their food storage, things would have been immeasurably more difficult.

He thanked me for being a good friend and pushing the issue when he and his wife weren’t listening.

The family is now living a greatly reduced lifestyle, but keeping their heads above water and continuing with their preparations.

I share this story because on an individual basis, there is a host of things that can happen in which being prepared could make a huge difference.

We often, as a people in general, terms take things for granted and think ‘this’ or ‘that’ will never happen to us.

In addition to a major job loss due to a myriad of reasons, you could lose your health or the ability to do your job.

Unfortunately, things of this nature are happening to more and more people every day. In fact, I’m certain all of us have been affected to some degree by similar stories of friends and relatives.

Our Current State of Affairs

The world in general seems afflicted on so many different fronts.

When you look at the list above, any rational person could easily see one or more of these scenarios occur within their lifetime.

Aside from the geophysical things that seem to be going haywire, and could be explained simply as the planet’s cycles, there are plenty of man-made catastrophes that loom on the horizon…

Never has the planet had as many people as it does now. With increased population numbers, there is increased pressure for resources.

More countries seek nuclear devices than ever before and recent advancements in technology make this much easier than any time before in history.

Biological and chemical weapons are also much easier to manufacture — and are being stored by an increasing number of very scary countries.

Oil markets are tighter than ever as demand from countries like China and India increases, but new supply cannot keep up with the increasing demand.

The financial debacle of the world economies needs no introduction to my listeners. In short, bad times — really bad times — for any number of reasons could and probably will be coming to a location near you.

Unless you and your family take this possibility quite seriously, if and when something does happen, you could very well find yourself in some extremely difficult circumstances…

Just look at the latest news coming out of Greece, as reported by Reuters.

This is happening right now — and it’s only going to spread.

When the political and economic systems of entire nations collapse the consequences are devastating.

Not too long ago pharmacies and hospitals in Greece were unable to provide lifesaving medicines due to a shortages caused by a freeze in the flow of credit from manufacturers to distributors to patients.

A collapse in the country’s economy forced many Greeks to turn to black market barter economies and has left millions financially devastated, with no hope of finding an income stream for the foreseeable future.

That was just a warm-up.

The main event is staring us in the face, and the whole of Europe has front-row seats.

What is happening in Europe is just a precursor for what will eventually be happening to the United States..

Your Pet Survival Plan

You’ve made a survival kit for you and your family, now it is time to take care of those who depend upon you for their survival.

A pet survival kit is important survival gear for anyone who loves their pets. When you acquired your pet you took on the responsibility of providing for all its needs. And that includes helping your pet survive come what may.

Having the proper pet survival kit goes beyond ensuring that your favourite animal is well taken care of.

For example, during large scale survival scenarios, such as the Katrina episode when hurricanes strike populated areas, pets are often let loose in vast numbers because their owners cannot properly take care of them.

Packs of roaming dogs are a danger to the community as they attempt to survive on their own.

Cats, exotic birds, and other pets may develop breeding populations that cause environmental havoc proceeding the survival emergency.

It is the responsibility of all pet owners to properly prepare for pet survival. The best pet survival kits will contain at least the following items or actions:

Recent pictures of your pet placed both in the pet survival kit and on your person. A pet survival collar worn by your pet that contains the pet’s id, name, address and phone number

Have all your pets’ injections up to date.

Your pet’s vaccination documents.

Pet Health records.

Complete array of pet medications should be in the pet survival kit.

An extra leash.

A pet carrier or a pet cage.

Water and food bowls.

A two week pet survival food supply.

Several gallons of clean drinking water.

A hand can opener (not electric!).

A pet waste disposal system including newspapers, cat littler, poop scoop, bleach, and plastic garbage bags.

A list containing detailed special instructions for the care of each pet.

Grooming supplies and toys.

The pet survival kit should contain clean pet bedding.

Put the contents of the pet survival kit into an easy to transport container.

You also need to have a pet survival plan that considers the needs of your pet for any situation.

Know the locations of local shelters for both you and your pets and ask if they accept pets during survival situations.

Your pet’s survival depends upon you even when times are easy. When survival is at stake, you need to be prepared to continue caring for your pets so that they come out alive and healthy.

A pet survival kit is required gear for any pet owner.

The Emergency Information System

The three most important factors in surviving a disaster are physical fitness, training, and knowledge.

The first two are the hardest to achieve since it takes considerable time to get, and stay fit, as well as practice those skills vital to a survival situation. But the knowledge part is easy.

I keep a modest collection of books at home that cover a wide range of subjects, everything from learning how to stitch a wound, to how to build a greenhouse.

But if there was a major disaster and I had to evacuate to a retreat location, it would be impossible to bring my books with me.

A few years back I thought of bringing my laptop, with all my books in PDF format loaded on the hard drive. But laptops were pretty heavy, fragile, and had a short battery life.

And how would you recharge the batteries if you had no power? Laptops run on between 7.2 V to 14.8 V. so even if you brought along a 12v solar panel you’d be hard pressed to get the battery fully charged even in direct sunlight.

Without electricity the only ways to recharge a laptop were through your vehicles 12v cigarette lighter using a DC/AC inverter, or from a portable generator.

So if you were bugging out on foot, then don’t bother bringing the laptop.

But the latest generation of e-readers, smart phones, and tablets have solved all these problems.

The first problem solved is weight and size, Smart Phones and Tablets are much smaller and lighter than laptops, and if you get a sturdy case for them they can withstand a bit of rough handling.

The battery life is also much longer, anywhere from 4 to 14 hours.

The best part is that they all can be recharged from a 5.5V, 500mA source.

This means that not only will my 12 volt 5 watt solar panel be more than adequate to recharge the battery, but on cloudy days I could also recharge it using either a hand charger or pedal generator.

The whole kit consisting of a tablet, solar panel, hand charger, and bicycle generator, could fit in a messenger pouch 7” X 12’ X 2.5” and would weigh just over 3lbs.

Even if you had to evacuate on foot, it is well worth the space and weight to carry this kit since not only will you have access to hundreds of important books and manuals, but you could also watch some of your favorite movies on a flash drive.

Anyone who has been without TV, internet and Wi-Fi for a few days knows how dull and boring things can get. Watching a good movie once a day would greatly improve morale.

And since you have three alternative methods of recharging the battery, you’ll always be able to have it running when you need to.

In addition the battery chargers can be used to recharge your radios and flashlights too.

Flash Drives

Most Smart Phones and Tablets have enough on-board memory to store a couple of hundred books easily, but I don’t want to store my survival information on my Tablet for two reasons.

First, most don’t have that much storage space to begin with and since a survival library is something you would need only in an emergency, I don’t want to use up the internal memory when I’m using the device during everyday activities.

The second reason is security. Think how fast you would end up in an ‘interrogation room’ if you are stopped at the boarder or pulled over by police and they discover there are books on ‘Escape and Evade Tactics’ and ‘Military Training Manuals’ on your smart phone.

There is nothing illegal about reading such books, I have them to be better prepared to survive a disaster, not plan a terrorist attack.

But since law enforcement can’t seem to tell the difference between the two, I prefer to keep my possession of such material discreet. A Flash Drive or SD Card are easy to hide or conceal.

Many smart phones, tablets, and e-readers won’t allow you to use an external flash drive to upload content without either buying extra adapters and/or installing software and drivers.

Before deciding on which device you want to use as part of your Emergency Information System, do some research on whether that particular model has a standard USB port, a Micro USB port, or a SD Card slot, and if they are configured as an input. (Some USB ports are only used for charging and can’t transfer information at all.)

An Emergency Information System should be a a vital part to your bug-out kit since having access to a library of medical, wilderness, survival, technical, and homesteading books can provide you with the knowledge to overcome any obstacle and save lives.

In addition, this kit will provide some entertainment to help restore a sense of normalcy during a disaster, which is especially vital if you have children with you.

Putting together a kit consisting of a Tablet, Solar Charger, Hand charger or even a bicycle charger and a couple of flash drives is not expensive at all.

I recommend you carry three flash drives. One for your survival and prepping books, another with all your personal information and scanned copies of your important ID and credit cards, and a third, or more, loaded with your favourite movies or YouTube videos.

Bugging Out-The Basics

Your bug-out bag should contain the things you need to survive while you’re on the road to your BOL or heading home.

You’ll need water, food, a good knife, fire starting materials, and a first aid kit, among other things.

Water Is YOUR Priority

You can survive up to 3 days without water, but the longer you go without water, the more difficult it becomes to think logically.

If you can’t think straight, your survival rates plummet. So be sure to pack some water, water purification tablets, and a good filtration bottle. This is a priority for a well stocked bug-out bag.

Food

After water, you need to have some form of sustenance to keep your body fuelled for the trip ahead. High energy bars and crisps, better still trail-mix will keep you going whilst on the move. I like to put survival food into 3 categories…quick and easy, heat and eat, and foraged from the wild.

Quick and Easy

When you have to get out of Dodge fast, you need food you can eat on the run. Pack foods that provide protein, carbs, vitamins, and minerals to keep your body functioning on your trip, especially if you need to walk or bike to your destination.

Stash a variety of ready to eat foods and rotate them often. If your bug out bag is packed and left in a closet for a couple years, some of those foods could get mouldy…so use it and replace it.

Here’s my list of favourite quick foods you can eat as you move:

Jerky

Nuts and Seeds

Dried fruits

Power bars

Granola bars

Protein powder (mix into your water)

If your bug out trip is going to be lengthy, or you have no real destination in mind, you’ll want some heartier fare.

When the nights get cold, a hot meal can do wonders for morale.

So try packing some of these mixes that are ready to eat after adding boiling water, stirring, and letting them cook for 5 minutes or less.

These mixes are a lot like the cups of instant soup available in shops, except it is a lot cheaper to make your own and you can take a Thermos mug and your mixes in Z-lock bags in a lot less space than those soup cups.

Here are two recipes:

Cheesy Potatoes

1 cup instant mashed potatoes

1 Tbs cheddar cheese powder

Dash of salt and pepper (Leave the salt if cheese powder contains salt)

Mix ingredients in a plastic bag and store in a dry place. You can add dried veggies to increase nutritional value. To heat: Pour contents into a large mug or a bowl. Add enough boiling water to cover mix. Stir and add more water if necessary. Let stand for 5 minutes and eat.

Tex-Mex Beans and Rice

3/4 cup instant rice

1/4 cup dried instant refried beans

2 Tbs freeze dried sweet corn

1 Tbs dried tomato powder

1 tsp taco seasoning

Dash of salt and pepper

Mix ingredients in a plastic bag and store in a dry place. To heat: Pour contents into a large mug or a bowl. Add enough boiling water to cover mix. Stir and add more water if necessary. Let stand for 5 minutes and eat.

Foraging for Wild Food

Edible greens, nuts, and fruits grow in the wild, we just need to know what’s safe to eat.

Pack a guide to edible plants for your area in your bug out bag and practice foraging before the SHTF.

It will slow you down if you need to forage for all of your food on your trip, but having this knowledge may keep you from starving when you run out of your bug out bag preps.

What Else?

Foil containers of tuna, salmon, or chicken

Small cans of meat and fish

Tea bags, coffee, sugar, milk powder etc.

Small pot to boil water

Sharp knife

Tin opener

Mug and spoon/spork

Container for gathering wild edibles

Don’t fill your bug out bag with junk food! Make sure you have a variety of ready to eat, and ready to heat foods to keep your body going strong through a long hard trek.

And get it ready now! You may not have time to think carefully about what goes in your bug out bag when the SHTF.

It would be bad news to get out in the wild and only have a bag of biscuits to munch on. So prepare now and survive later!

Note: The recipes for mixes can be made up in larger quantities. You can also change the seasoning, or add other dried ingredients that you like. Just be sure to keep them in a dry place and rotate once every 4 to 6 months.

THE WILDERNESS GATHERING 15th – 18th August 2019 (4 days)

The Wilderness Gathering has over the years become a firm date in the diaries of those who enjoy bushcraft, nature and wilderness survival skills. The previous eleven years have seen this event grow from a small event in one field with some traders and schools sharing bushcraft skills and knowledge to a festival of wilderness living skills encompassing bushcraft/survival and woodland crafts.

The show has grown into an event with something for all the family with stories and music by the camp fire in the evenings and skills workshops and activities throughout the three whole days of the festival.

There are hands on demonstrations of game preparation, knife sharpening, basha boat building, bowmaking, greenwood working, archery and axe throwing and primitive fire lighting to name just a few. There are talks on survival phycology, classes on falconry and wilderness survival fishing. All of these skills are there for everybody and anybody to participate in.

You can probably pick up information on nearly all the skills needed to live in the wilderness and prosper at The Wilderness Gathering.

There is a wealth of good quality trade stands that are carefully selected to be in theme for the show selling everything from custom knives to tipis and outdoor clothing to primitive tools. The organisers have even laid on a free service bring and buy stall where you can bring along your used and unwanted kit and they’ll sell it for you.

There are local scout and explorer groups on site promoting the World Wide Scouting Movement as well helping out with some of the classes and site logistics.

Campfire Bannock

Fresh bread on a camping trip for me is essential and it also feels like a treat, especially a long hard day building and setting up camp.

One way to make this treat is by cooking bannock. For over a 1000 years, bannock, a simple bread made from the flour of a variety of grains, has filled the bellies of adventurers sitting around campfires.

Its attraction is the simple base ingredients and its ease of cooking.

My favourite way to make bannock is to cook it on a stick over a camp fire.

Preparation of the Bread Dough

At home mix all the dry ingredients into a zip lock bag. You can substitute or remove some of the ingredients as you wish.

Traditional bannock was just flour and water. In my recipe, baking powder makes the bread fluffy, salt brings out the flavours, powdered milk allows the bread to brown and butter adds flavour.

You can add anything to the base to change the flavours. If you want a sweet bread add cinnamon and sugar. In the mood for something cheesy, then toss in some chunks of cheese.

1 cup flour

1 tsp baking powder

1/4 tsp salt

2 tbsp powdered milk

1 tbsp oil or butter

In camp, mix in the oil or butter (ghee). Add water slowly until you create dough the consistency of play-doh. You want a firm dough that isn’t sticky.

If you use the baking powder, set the dough aside to let it rise.

Your Campfire

You don’t need a big fire to cook bannock.

You just need one with hot coals. I usually wait to cook bannock until an evening when I’m going to make a fire anyway, then start a fire, let it die down to red-hot coals and get it going again after I finish the bread.

Keep in mind that your bannock picks up the flavour of smoke, so select wood that you know tastes good to you. You might not be able to tell the difference, but if you have an advanced camp-cooking palate, you may.

Find a Green Wood Stick

Since, you’re going to cook the bannock on a stick, you need to gather the perfect stick.

Preferably, pick a stick that’s freshly cut, green.

Look for a stick that ranges in size from one to two fingers thick. The bigger sticks are heavier, which is a concern, because you’ll have to hold the stick over the fire for about 10 minutes.

The smaller sticks force you to make a long loaf, which makes it hard to evenly cook the middle and end. I find a stick about three fingers wide works best.

Once you have your stick, remove both the inner and outer layers of bark. Then, temper it by holding it over your fire until it becomes hot to touch.

Don’t burn the stick or your bread will take on that taste. By tempering the stick, the bread will cook from the inside as well as from the outside.

Wrap the Bannock

Take the bread dough and roll it into a snake-like shape. You’re in the woods, so it doesn’t have to look perfect. Start wrapping the dough around the stick.

As you wrap, spiral the dough down the stick and compress and spread it, so the dough is less than a half-inch thick. Any thicker and the dough has trouble cooking through.

Find a Hot Spot Above the Fire

The inside of the dough wrap needs to cook before the outside finishes, so you need to find a distance above the fire where the temperature is just right–if you hold it too close the outside will brown too quickly leaving a wet, doughy interior. Find the right distance by holding your hand over the fire. When you find a place you can hold your hand for around 10 to 15 seconds, you’ve found the right height.

Cook the Bannock

Hold the bannock over the fire at the right distance and let it cook.

Rotate the bread so all the sides cook evenly.

At first, rotate the bread more often to help stop any sag in the dough. Be careful not to allow the bread to get to close or you’ll end up burning a side.

It takes around 10 minutes to cook the bannock.

Take the Bannock off the Stick

When the bannock is finished, it should easily come off the stick. If it’s not done, the bread dough will stick making it hard to slide.

You want bread that’s dry and fluffy. To help remove the dough, rotate a small section until it breaks and pulls off. Work the rest of the bread off the stick. Enjoy.

The Simplest Survival Navigation Technique

Things happen…your GPS or compass may become lost or broken.

You may find yourself needing an alternate method of finding your bearings. You can use terrain association, if there is some readily identifiable features in view, but you really need to orient your map to a direction.

Anyone who has gone through any survival courses has been taught a variety of methods of survival navigation. Most have two problems in common, first they only apply to certain conditions, second they are a little too complicated and very easy to forget.

If you wish to use the North Star, it must be night, you need a clear night sky and must be in the northern hemisphere. The watch method of survival navigation is difficult since almost no one can remember which hand does what, and how north is indicated.

Also most people now wear digital watches without the hands on them, especially during outdoor activities. The stick shadow technique for survival navigation is simple, easy to remember and works anywhere on the planet in conditions where you can see a shadow.

The improvised Survival Navigation Technique is the simplest and most versatile method for direction finding without a compass.

It works anywhere on the planet as long as the sun throws a shadow.

Equipment needed is simple: only a stick or straight object such as a pen, and two small objects like pennies or rocks and you will be able to find north.

Step One of the Stick Shadow Technique for Survival Navigation

Place your stick or any straight object into the ground, so it throws a shadow.

Step Two

Put a rock or penny at the tip of the shadow, something easily identifiable and wait 15 or 20 minutes.

Step Three

Place a second object at the tip of the shadow’s new position.

Step Four

Place your left foot on the first rock or penny and your right foot on the second object. Just remember that you read left to right so your left foot goes on the first object and right on the second object, or if you are military-minded you always start off with your left foot.

You are now facing north!

All you really need to remember is to place the two rocks at the tip of the stick’s shadow. Then place your left foot on the first rock and right foot on the second rock.

If you ever find yourself without a compass and in need of a little help orienting yourself, then this technique is easy to remember and needs little equipment or special conditions.

We’re Headed Towards A New Nuclear Arms Race AGAIN!

Washington has suspended its participation in the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF), State Secretary Mike Pompeo has said, adding that the US might still return to compliance in 180 days if Moscow meets its demands.

After the failure of last-ditch talks with Russia on Thursday, President Donald Trump will soon give formal notice that the U.S. will “suspend” and in six months withdraw from the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty.

This treaty, signed by Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev, broke the back of the Cold War nuclear arms race.

A new arms competition now beckons. A new treaty to reduce nuclear arms seems unlikely.

Donald Trump’s endorsement of an intended defense to protect U.S. cities will prompt more missiles to defeat its purpose.

Vladimir Putin has already threatened an arms race with Trump’s withdrawal from the INF Treaty. Putin’s threat has been called and raised by Trump’s space wall.

All this suits National Security Adviser John Bolton, Trump’s Svengali, just fine. The United States can compete and compete well in an unfettered arms race.

Any time your national defense budget is ten times bigger than Russia’s and five times bigger than China’s, you can afford an arms race.

But arms races usually don’t end well: even if you stay ahead of the competition, your security is diminished.

There was a superpower arms race after the Soviet Union launched Sputnik in 1957.

The United States competed hard, and soon enough there was a missile gap — in Washington’s favour.

Another arms race was brewing in the 1960s when Washington and Moscow had ambitious plans to build nationwide missile defences.

In the 1970s and 1980s, both superpowers began to place more than one warhead atop their longest-range missiles.

It took twenty years for treaties to cap and reduce this competition.

Moscow and Washington are casting aside these treaties like old, ill-fitting clothes.

First, George W. Bush withdrew from the 1972 Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty which banned nationwide defences and which eventually enabled deep cuts. In response to Bush, Putin walked away from the 1993 Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty banning land-based missiles carrying multiple warheads.

Now Putin is deploying these “MIRVed” missiles to counter new missile defences by the United States.

With the INF Treaty biting the dust, more of these intermediate-range missiles are in the offing. Bolton rejected Putin’s offer to inspect the missile deemed to be a treaty violation by the U.S. intelligence community.

Putin’s offer might well have been disingenuous, or it could have been a diplomatic opening. We’ll never know.

Clarifying and reducing this missile’s range capability was unacceptable to Bolton; nothing less than destroying these missiles would do.

Now Putin is free to deploy more of them.

So the Cold War has taught our leaders nothing, they seem to want to dive back into the arms race as if it were simply a game.

A game it is not, and it never was, we lived under the constant threat of a nuclear war, either one began by human error, computer error or by simply mis-reading our opponents actions.

This is a dark day for the world, and I hope that common sense will prevail, pull us back from the brink and prevent decades of treaties and trust being lost for ever.

Boiled British Freshwater Fish Recipes

Why should camp fire cooking be only grill bake and roast?

Why should camp fire cooking be bland?

Why not plan and prepare for your wild food meals?

These can be cooked using foraged greens or taken home and given the chief treatment.

Boiled Tench

Prepare the tench by scaling, gutting, removing the gills then washing and patting dry.

Place in a large pan then pour over just enough water to cover. Add 25g of salt per 1l of water added then bring to a simmer, cover and cook gently for about 10 minutes, or until the fish is cooked through.

Transfer the tench to a warmed serving plate and garnish with parsley. Accompany with melted butter.

Boiled Trout

This is a traditional British recipe for a classic dish of boiled trout that’s filleted and served topped with, garlic, vinegar, lemon juice and olive oil. Ingredients: 2 medium trout, cleaned and scaled 2 summer truffles 2 garlic cloves 1 tbs. red wine vinegar 2 tsp extra-virgin olive oil juice of 1 lemon sea salt, to taste

Method

Bring a pan of lightly-salted water to a boil. Add the trout and cook for about 20 minutes, or until done through. Remove the fish then take off all the skin and fins.

Take the fish and carefully remove the flesh as four fillets (discard all the bones).

In the meantime, place the garlic in a mortar and crush to a paste.

Add the vinegar and lemon juice and mix thoroughly to combine.

Place the oil in a pan, add the truffle mixture and heat gently over a low flame (this should be just heated through, do not allow the sauce to fry).

Take off the heat and season to taste. Pour the sauce over the fish and serve.

Feed the 5 thousand

A fish boil is a fun, low-maintenance way to feed a large group of people — and although it is traditionally served outdoors, you can also bring the party inside.

Whether you’re planning an outdoor picnic or a big family get-together, a fish boil provides a nutritious, low-calorie meal for the entire family.

Step 1

Fill a large pot about three-quarters of the way up with water. Bring the water to a boil, either on your stovetop or outside on an open fire.

Step 2

Add the potatoes and 1 pound of salt for every 10 people, and then bring the liquid back up to a boil. Cook for 8 minutes, then add the onions to the pot.

Step 3

Add 2 pounds of peeled baby carrots, if desired. Wait until the water comes back to a boil, and then cook another 2 minutes. Double these cooking times for every 10 people you are serving.

Step 4

Add the whitefish and cook for 14 minutes. Use an instant-read thermometer to test the centre of the fish. If the fish reaches 145 degrees Fahrenheit in the centre, it’s done.

Step 5

Place one piece of fish, three onions and two potatoes on each plate, then add a pat of butter and spoon some of the broth over the fish. Serve with a wedge of lemon.

The Importance of Water

If you’re faced with a survival situation one of the things you’re going to have to do is to find water.

Your body loses around 2 to 3 litres of water every day through sweating and urination and this can be even greater if the weather’s hot and/or you’re using a lot of physical energy.

Therefore, in order to prevent dehydration, it’s important to find water to replace these lost fluids quickly.

Observing Nature

If you’re fortunate, you may be near a lake, river, stream or pond where you’re only concern will then be purifying the water but if you’re in arid terrain where there is no immediate evidence that flowing water is nearby, there are a number of resources that you can still tap into – it’s just a case of knowing where to look.

Low areas and valleys are natural places into which water will drain. Therefore, if you’re situated in an elevated area, you need to descend to have the best chance of finding water.

Look out for rock crevices as you go as rain will often collect in them. Muddy or damp ground is also a good indicator as are any areas of noticeably different green vegetation or a group of trees that seem ‘out of place’ with the rest of the landscape.

Have you seen any animals in the area? If not, what about animal tracks? If you’re able to spot some tracks which all tend to travel in the same direction, this could be a sign that the animal has headed for a place to drink.

Flocks of birds gathering in the same place and even a swarm of insects often means that there is water close by.

Rainwater, Dew and Condensation

Even if you’ve followed the observations above and still haven’t come across water, there are other things you can do to collect it. If it rains, many people have been able to survive simply by harvesting rainwater.

You can collect it from your tent by lowering the tent and having some kind of container in which to catch the raindrops which have landed on it – even a plastic bag will do.

Even if it’s sunny, there will still be dew to collect first thing in the morning. The easiest way to harvest dew is to get a cloth or an old T-shirt and simply drag it through the grass until the cloth is soaked with dew.

Then, simply wring it out either directly into your mouth or into a container.

You can even use condensation as a useful source of drinkable water. Both trees and plants draw moisture from the ground and the best way of utilising this is to tie a plastic bag to a branch which is facing the sun and tie a knot in the bag at the top over the branch.

Evaporation from the leaves will then result in condensation forming in the bag which you can then use to drink.

Solar Still

Building a solar still harnesses the sun’s energy to provide water and is still a device that is used by many tribes’ people today. Basically, they can be built using a sheet of strong plastic, a cup or some other kind of container and a piece of plastic tubing.

You should set up your still in the lowest, dampest area you can find then beginning digging a hole until you hit damp soil.

Then, place your cup in the middle of the hole and place one end of the plastic tubing in the cup.

Next you need to cover the hole with the plastic sheet ensuring that you have access to the other end of the tube outside the confines of your still and you can use the earth you have dug up to act as weight on top of the plastic sheet so that no air can escape.

As the soil is heated by the sun, the moisture evaporates and condenses on the plastic which then drips down to the lowest portion of the plastic then into your cup.

You can then drink from the cup by sucking on the tube which means you don’t have to disassemble your still first which can then be used again.

The Importance of Water Purification

Wherever possible, opt for flowing water as opposed to using water collected from stagnant pools as it’s less likely to contain as many impurities.

However, it’s important that you purify ALL water that’s been collected.

Even if you come across a stream that looks crystal clear, you can’t be sure that a dead animal isn’t lying further upstream, so you should purify all water that you take from the environment.

However, don’t collect water that has scum floating on it or where it’s surrounded by dead vegetation.

Clear, fast flowing water should always be your chosen option where possible and if the water bubbles or seems to be a strange colour or gives off an unpleasant odour, only use it as a last resort.

Remember that, in a survival situation, water takes on far more importance than food and until you’re sure you have enough water resources available, you should try to conserve as much energy as you can.

So, when out searching for water, try to do it early in the morning or late in the day when it will be cooler and you’re less likely to lose as much fluid through perspiring.

BREAK

Prepper-Survivalist- What’s the Difference?

I would say that not all survivalists are preppers but all preppers are survivalists. Now having probabley confuced you even more, I shall continue.

Preppers prepare for a natural or man-made disaster that would remove the comforts of modern life for an extended period of time.

Here I am talking about an EMP/CME, Nuclear accident, attack, biological or chemical, floods, earthquakes, all types of bad weather etc. plus loads more.

I suggest that “everyone” is in fact a prepper whether they will admitt that or not. Anyone who has a spare wheel, first-aid-kit, umbrella, waterproofs, fire extinguisher or even a flashligh is preparing for something. The “prepper” as they have been portrayed in the media takes it a stage further that is all.

The prepper plans to be able to survive this SHTF or TEOTWAWKI event by having srote of water, food, weapons, ammo, medicines, fuel, etc.etc.

A prepper I would suggest is a single person looking after number one, or a family man/woman looking after his/her family and they focus only on that to the exclusion of others around them.

In fact their only focus is to acquire everything they would need to survive any disaster that affects them.

Any cross over between the prepper and the survivalist is to me quite obvious as if the prepper loses his/her stores then they too will have to survive on little if anything, in fact they would then by a survivalist, if that is of course, they had bothered to learn the relevant skills and knowledge.

In any case in the long term the prepper will use up all the stotes they had gathered and what will they do then? again the only option will by to revert to being a survivalist living on knowledge and learned skills.

The survivalist however in my opinion plans to survive using knowledge and skills gained from experience over a perion of time. The survivalist learns how to provide shelter, clean water, make fire, hunt, trap, fish, forage, cook, navigate etc.etc. with the minimum of equipment because survival situations happen when we are least prepared, or when we are miles away from our preps.

The Homesteader is a combination of both prepper and survivalist and is perhaps the ideal that all preppers and survivalist aim to be.

They are usually land owners, with a shelter of some type with access to water, crops, livestock, and preps made from the surplus of their production.

They know how to can, smoke, dry and to preserve their extra foods for another day. They have moved off grid in many cased thus removing their dependence upon the society and the system they have removed themselves from.

I hope this helps you understand and goes some way to answering your questions.

Tips for Over Night Survival

In the UK, most people who become lost are often day hikers or climbers who fully expect to sleep in their own bed (or at least in their own sleeping bag) that night.

But a turn onto the wrong trail or an extra twenty minutes of late afternoon climbing can result in an unexpected overnight stay. Not forgetting an injury event either.

If you don’t carry a “survival kit” as such, there are a few inexpensive yet essential items I seldom venture far from home without.

Among these are:

A reliable, sturdy survival knife.

A good-quality multi-tool.

A length of Parachute cord.

A competent knowledge of how to use these three items will allow you to cut poles, prepare kindling, lash together a shelter, make a bow-drill fire, and perform a host of other tasks.

Other items include:

A foil emergency blanket can also be used as an improvised poncho, ground cloth, or tarp.

First aid kit. It should include gauze, bandages, butterflies, antibiotic cream, plasters etc.

Compass: Worthwhile if you know how to use it, or know the approximate direction of nearby major landmarks.

A Wooley hat (even in warm weather). In addition to keeping you warm, it can be used as a bag.

A magnesium striker

A method of water purification (water-to-go filter bottle).

A whistle. In really remote areas, a signal mirror is also a worthy addition.

Tips:

Learn to construct a simple cold-weather survival shelter.
It doesn’t take a freezing night to bring about fatal hypothermia. Temperatures
even in the fifties can be disastrous if you are improperly dressed or wet.

Always carry or wear a bandana. It can be used as a bandage, sling, or carrying bundle. A belt is useful, too.

Wrap a quantity of duct tape around your water bottle. Use good quality tape.

Stay put: You arrive at “lostness” from one direction, a single degree out of 360.

You have 359 chances to depart your situation in the wrong direction.

Make a base camp: As humans, our sense of well-being is improved when we have a place to call home, even if it is a temporary one.

Locate it in an area that is out of the wind, and where it won’t be flooded during a rainstorm.

Learn how to tie and use half a dozen or so simple but useful knots. Overhand knot, square knot, clove hitch, bowline, sheet bend, lark’s head, timber hitch, and variations on the half-hitch are good suggestions.

Customize your list: Include items specific to your needs such as daily or emergency medications, inhalers, or epi-pens.

Practice your skills and become familiar with your gear before you need them, so you know what to expect! when the time comes to use them, as it is then too late to learn them.

Having to night –out even with what some would see as sub-standard kit is not the end of the world so don’t panic.

Having clothes on is better than being naked, being behind a wall, hedge or tree is better than being exposed to the elements.

Being under a poncho is better than being wet, being in a cheap tent is better than being in a poncho, being in a sleeping is better than being without one, I think you get the message.

Any shelter is better than none.

You main priority in finding shelter is to defend your body from the weather that is it you must keep dry and warm to have a chance of survival.

And as long as you understand the basic principles you can go on survival exercises even without the top of the range designer kit, because people have survived with far less before they were invented and I promise people will continue to do so in the
future.

Dry Salting Technique for Sauerkraut

Since living in Germany and visiting Poland 5 times I cannot get enough sauerkraut. So I thought I would look into making my own.

Sauerkraut, like most fermentations, involves a succession of several different organisms.

The fermentation involves a broad community of bacteria, with a succession of different dominant players, determined by the increasing acidity.

Do not be deterred by the biological complexity of the transformation.

That happens on its own once you create the simple conditions for it.

Sauerkraut is very easy to make.

The sauerkraut method is also referred to as dry-salting, because typically no water is added and the juice under which the vegetables are submerged comes from the vegetables themselves.

This is the simplest and most straightforward method, and results in the most concentrated vegetable flavour.

Time: 3 days to 3 months (and beyond)

Container: 1-litre wide-mouth jar, or a larger jar or ceramic dish.

Ingredients (for 1 litre):

1 kilogram of vegetables per litre, any varieties of cabbage alone or in combination, or at least half cabbage and the remainder any combination of radishes, turnips, carrots, beets, kohlrabi, Jerusalem artichokes, onions, shallots, leeks, garlic, greens, peppers, or other vegetables

Approximately 1 tablespoon salt (start with a little less, add if needed after tasting)

Other seasoning’s as desired, such as caraway seeds, juniper berries, dill, chilli peppers, ginger, turmeric, dried cranberries, or whatever you can conjure in your imagination

Method:

Prepare the vegetables. Remove the outer leaves of the cabbage and reserve.

Scrub the root vegetables but do not peel. Chop or grate all vegetables into a bowl.

The purpose of this is to expose surface area in order to pull water out of the vegetables, so that they can be submerged under their own juices.

The finer the veggies are shredded, the easier it is to get juices out, but size does not really matter

Salt and season. Salt the vegetables lightly and add seasoning’s as you chop.

Sauerkraut does not require heavy salting.

Taste after the next step and add more salt or seasoning’s, if desired. It is always easier to add salt than to remove it.

Squeeze the salted vegetables with your hands for a few minutes.

This bruises the vegetables, breaking down cell walls and enabling them to release their juices.

Squeeze until you can pick up a handful and when you squeeze, juice releases (as from a wet sponge).

Pack the salted and squeezed vegetables into your jar. Press the vegetables down with force, using your fingers or a blunt tool, so that air pockets are expelled and juice rises up and over the vegetables.

Fill the jar not quite all the way to the top, leaving a little space for expansion.

The vegetables have a tendency to float to the top of the brine, so it’s best to keep them pressed down, using one of the cabbage’s outer leaves, folded to fit inside the jar, or a carved chunk of a root vegetable, or a small glass or ceramic insert.

Screw the top on the jar; lactic acid bacteria are anaerobic and do not need oxygen (though they can function in the presence of oxygen).

However, be aware that fermentation produces carbon dioxide, so pressure will build up in the jar and needs to be released daily, especially the first few days when fermentation will be most vigorous.

Be sure to loosen the top to relieve pressure each day for the first few days.

The rate of fermentation will be faster in a warm environment, slower in a cool one.

Some people prefer their krauts lightly fermented for just a few days; others prefer a stronger, more acidic flavour that develops over weeks or months.

Taste after just a few days, then a few days later, and at regular intervals to discover what you prefer. Along with the flavour, the texture changes over time, beginning crunchy and gradually softening.

Move to the refrigerator if you wish to stop (or rather slow) the fermentation. In a cool environment, kraut can continue fermenting slowly for months.

In the summer or in a heated room, its life cycle is more rapid; eventually it can become soft and mushy.

Enjoy your kraut! I start eating it when the kraut is young and enjoy its evolving flavour over the course of a few weeks (or months in a large batch).

Be sure to try the sauerkraut juice that will be left after the kraut is eaten. Sauerkraut juice packs a strong flavour, and is unparalleled as a digestive tonic or hangover cure.

Tips…

Surface growth – The most common problem that people encounter in fermenting vegetables is surface growth of yeasts and/or moulds, which are caused by oxygen.

Many books refer to this as “scum,” but I prefer to think of it as a bloom. It’s a surface phenomenon, a result of contact with the air.

If you should encounter surface growth, remove as much of it as you can, along with any discoloured or soft kraut from the top layer, and throw away.

The fermented vegetables beneath will generally look, smell, and taste fine. The surface growth can break up as you remove it, making it impossible to remove all of it. Don’t worry.

Develop a rhythm – Start a new batch before the previous one runs out. Get a few different flavours or styles going at once for variety. Experiment!

Variations – Add a little fresh vegetable juice and dispense with the need to squeeze or pound.

Incorporate mung bean sprouts . . .hydrated seaweed . . . shredded or quartered brussels sprouts… cooked potatoes (mashed, fried, and beyond, but always cooled!) . . . dried or fresh fruit… the possibilities are infinite . . .

How to Make Nettle Soup

With consumers being so bombarded with marketing for ready-meals, fast-food, and other chemical rubbish often I find people forget about some of nature’s ingredients that are normally right on their doorstep!

This is how to make a nettle soup, which not only is a cheap and easy to make meal but also extremely good for you.

Nettles (which are rich in iron and contain lots of great vitamins) have been said by many to have anti-anaemic, anti-diabetic and anti-inflammatory properties.

It’s also a diuretic so is great for detoxing and helps remove toxins from the blood.

On top of all that it also is a great remedy against arthritis, rheumatic conditions, allergies, kidney disease…. (And the list goes on!)

All of that from a pesky weed that most of us avoid and ignore!

Preparation:

First things first, pick a good spot. I would try avoid any spots that are nearby to roads as you’ll likely get a mouthful of pollution, and try to look out for the smaller sized nettles as they are more nutritious and tasty for your soup.

The spot I found today was in a clearing in a local wood but the same principles can be applied to most of the world!

Now you have found your spot, onto some practicalities of nettle picking, wear a good pair of gloves.

If you get stung, take a look around for any doc leaves (big vainly leaves normally found nearby to nettles) as rubbing these on a new sting will relieve the pain.

Typically to make a batch of soup for four people you will want to get about half a bag of nettles.

At this point if you want to pick more nettles you might want to consider filing up your bags and then:

Preparing and freezing any leftover nettles for another day (just wash/cut/dry them and they will freeze well)

Make nettle tea by cutting off the tips (they taste less bitter in tea) and putting in a cafetiere.

You can also dry the nettles for tea by either hanging them up in a warm place say the airing cupboard.

Look up some of the other handy uses for nettles (you’ll probably be surprised how versatile they are!)

Ingredients For the Soup.

1 large onion

2 or 3 garlic gloves (or more or less to your taste)

2 or 3 potatoes

Splash of olive oil

Knob of butter

Salt and pepper (to taste)

Chicken stock (this is very easy to make from leftover chicken) or just use a cube

Cream (optional, to taste)

Cayene Pepper or Chilli Flakes (optional if you like your soups to pack a kick!)

Making the Soup:

Step 1 Prepare the nettles (again at this point you may want to wear some gloves to avoid getting stung).

Wash and drain the nettles.

You only want to use the fresh smaller young looking leaves so pick these off the stalk and discard the rest (or better still stick them on your compost pile!). I find using a pair of scissors is a fast way of doing this.

Preparing the nettles for the soup

Step 2 Peel and chop your potatoes, garlic, and onion and fry them on a high heat in a saucepan with a bit of olive oil and some butter until the onion is soft and the potatoes have started to go brown.

If you want a spicy “sting!” to your soup then also add in either some cayenne pepper or some chilli flakes to taste.

Making the nettle soup mix

Step 3 Add the nettles into the pan and mix around with a wooden spoon and after 30 seconds or so add a litre of boiled water and your chicken stock. (If you have made the stock fresh you may need a few extra cubes to get in more flavour)

Step 4 Boil the soup on a medium heat until the potatoes are soft (normally takes between 12-15 minutes).

Step 5 Take the soup off the heat (and ideally let it cool for a bit) then blend the whole thing till you have a smooth consistency.

You can return the soup to the pan on a high heat after this briefly to warm it up ready for serving adding in any salt and pepper to taste.

Step 6 Serve the soup with some nice organic bread and if you like you can add some cream by swirling around in the bowl with a small spoon for a mind blowing and decorative finish!

Not Getting Enough Sleep

For months I drove down to Southern Italy and back once a week a 3,000 mile round trip. Although the contract was to deliver within 24hrs, my best ever time was 19hrs 30mins.

I can promise you that I do know what not enough sleep feels like and when driving it is bloody scary indeed.

Especially when on a motorway with no junctions available to pull off and rest.

Whith this being a weekly problem I started cat napping, setting my mobile alarm for 10 or 15mins and literally switching off. This is or was enough for me to then be able to carry on for a 100 or so miles.

A worn out look, red eyes, black circles, staring into space, disorientation, headaches, stumbling, uncontrolled shaking, thirst, irrational thinking, problematic problem solving, and Zombie-like appearance and behaviour.

You’re alive, but you have the Zombie look which can definitely have a serious impact on your SHTF event behaviour and performance, so plan for it happening at some point.

You won’t know it, when you got it

According to the most basic definition of sleep deprivation from Wikipedia, “it is the condition of not having enough sleep. A chronic sleep restricted state can cause fatigue, daytime sleepiness, clumsiness, and weight loss or gain.

It adversely affects the brain and cognitive function. Sleep deprivation over long periods of time can cause diabetes, effects on the brain, effects on growth, impacts on the healing process, loss of attention and functional memory, over all decline of general abilities, and many other conditions.

It is not a simple condition that can be ignored, especially for preppers and survivalists and others caught up in a survival scenario.

The worst part of having this condition is the fact that once you have it, it may already be too late to recognize you have it. It’s like boiling a frog in water by slowly raising the temperature of the water.

The frog never notices the changes until its dead, and rarely does a person as sleep deprivation creeps up upon them.

All of you died-in-the-wool preppers have long ago debated the pros and cons of either going it alone or with a limited number of close family members or a much bigger, but perhaps still manageable sized group.

Obviously going totally solo is the toughest route, and frankly I personally think the most impractical. Few people if any have all the collective skills and knowledge needed to survive a SHTF by themselves.

In a group Bug-In or Out the “team” can learn to rely on each other.

There is an immediate system of checks and balances for everything from gathering/preparing food, doing security work, area maintenance, health checks, and everything else.

One of the high level advantages to working within a group is that each person can monitor how each other person is doing.

This is critical when it comes to members that are on medications, or have pre-existing conditions. It is particularly helpful for everyone to watch each others behaviour in potential cases of depression, paranoia, fear, shock, and conditions like sleep deprivation.

This group partnership also pays huge dividends when it comes to everyday accidents, minor or serious.

If the onset of any of these is caught early enough, then accommodations among the group can be made to deal with them to a positive conclusion.

In this case its sleep deprivation which if on your own could evolve without much warning, and then it’s too late.

In a group each can easily see signs that the lack of dedicated sleep is impacting a person’s performance and behaviour.

Catnaps, Mini-sleeps, Dozing, and Rim Sleep

Eventually you will sleep. But the primary question is do you want to maintain the control of the how, when, and where or have the lack of sleep inadvertently control you?

The best strategy is to plan for sleep just like any other necessity of maintaining all other daily activities within a Bug-Out or Bug-In set up.

All people sleep at different times and flexible rates with varying intensities. In a normal daily routine many of us work eight hours a day, and sleep eight hours a night. But then these days such a schedule seems far more rare than standard. There are many work/rest schedules for a lot of people that certainly don’t fall within the realm of eight hour set periods.

Lots of people work shift work, odd schedules, weekends, and nights. They find sleep when they can, however poor the quality.

One way or the other we all have some sort or manner of a routine. During a SHTF episode that routine is going to be totally disrupted and often turned completely upside down or inside out.

Many of us will have to relearn how to grab some shut eye any way we can. Some should be better than none.

So, during a SHTF develop as fixed a schedule as you can.

Work toward trading off duties with others so that everybody can find time to sleep. You may not be able to lie down on a bed for several hours.

A good recliner or a soft spot out in the woods can work, too. Its very important the comfort factor must be addressed. Nobody sleeps well on a rock, standing up in a corner, or across the bonnet of a car.

As you prep or a Bug-Out in particular since the comforts of home will no longer be available for the most part, do plan for high quality options in a sleeping bag, portable pad, and some sort of pillow.

Same for a Bug-In make plans to sleep however short lived. Catching a few catnaps or dozing for a short time will help if prolonged sleep is not possible.

Find a soft, quiet place and take full advantage of every opportunity to sleep despite how minor. Otherwise sleep deprivation will creep in and take control over you. Avoid that at all costs.

The H2R Nova Review

Firstly, it is great to know that Olight is one of the oldest brands that have been around since 2006.

The headlamp is light, seems to be built tough (metal and hard plastic), and has a whopping 2,300 lumens which light up the entire area. Styling is nice, and some of the added features are helpful like its magnetic charging ability..

I love the strap which just feels right, it is strong, thick, and soft. The headlamp light unit is attached to the strap by a very strong rubber clip.

The beam actually rotates between to any angle (360°) which is really useful and very practicable.

The headlamp light unit is made of metal – and is very strong indeed.

It looks more of a quality professional item than many I have seen and used.

The hard rubber clip that is in the strap in the front to hold the headlamp light unit is strong and well designed as well. You can tell that thought, design and longevity have played they part in its making.

With the addition of a metal clip which will hold the headlamp light unit firmly on your jacket, shirt pocket or belt simply turns it into a flashlight, two for the price of one.

Something I have not seen before is a magnetic charging facility, I think that’s quite cool, by the way.

So you have in the H2R Nova a top quality headlamp with up to 2,300 lumens and if required a top quality flashlight with 2,300 lumens, what a unique quality idea.

But is it any good?

Well firstly, who would use it?

I think some people will really enjoy this tough headlamp for the following activities:

Preppers and Survivalists

running – street or trail, fast or slow

cycling – street or trail, fast or slow

walking trails or streets

fishing

hunting – not an excellent tight beam, but some will be fine with it.

camping

Working on your vehicle or outdoors around the house at night

wildlife excursions at night – I think at 600 lumens, this is going to be just right for my needs, though I will need another battery to last long enough for my typical outing length.

OLight H2R Nova Headlamp PROS

600 lumens for 2 hrs 30 mins is pretty good – and almost as long as I need it for. Most people will be happy with this for max power.

2,300 Turbo boost will be helpful in some situations – even self-defense!

SOS function could be helpful someday.

Build quality and style are both quite nice.

The magnetic end is very strong and enables a new way to hold the light in some situations.

Super lightweight and good for most activities.

Nice to be able to hand-hold it comfortably – a headlamp and flashlight in one.

H2R NOVA CAUTIONS

The Turbo beam on this headlamp is so ridiculously strong that it’s about 10 times stronger than sunlight.

You could easily hurt your eyes and burn your retina in seconds. No im not joking, it’s really that strong.

So you need to be VERY careful not to look at the beam at or the bulb for even a couple seconds.

Years ago I did this with a less powerful light felt like I damaged my eyes. This one wouldn’t give you a chance to make a mistake like that You should treat it with respect!

The other caution about this headlamp is that I noticed it heat up in SECONDS on Turbo mode.

The beam itself is hot, but the unit gets SUPER heated in mere seconds as well.

This could be the reason that it dims after 1 minute.

During a test, I selected the 2300 lumens beam. It stayed lit for about a minute then dropped down to 750 lumens.

Having just one button on the top to activate the headlamp, it’s easy.

A push down turns the headlamp on in whatever mode you shut it off in. So, if you had it in turbo mode when you turned it off – it will turn on again in turbo mode.

You can double-click to reach Turbo mode and get it out of Turbo mode down to the regular low-med-high settings.

Once in the low setting, you can hold the button down to reach Medium.

Then hold it again to reach High.

To reach Moon mode, the headlamp must be off – and you hold the button down for 1+ seconds.

This mode goes for 45 days! It gives about 1/10th the light of a lit match. Not much, and you couldn’t hike with it at that level, but you could read something crucial, write, maybe type, but not much else!

So it a great idea when in your shelter.

Driving in Snow and Ice

The weather

The weather is an important factor when you’re driving. If it’s really bad, it might be best to postpone your trip or use public transport. Simply ask: Do I really need to go out?

Always try to avoid driving in thick fog or icy conditions as the risk of a road traffic incident is far higher.

Many drivers run into difficulties in very bad weather. Follow the weather forecasts and general advice to drivers through local and national media.

Snow and ice

Starting off

IF you experience wheelspin when you’re starting off in deep snow, don’t race the engine because the wheels will dig in further, if you have traction control, turn it off, and then on after you have moved off.

You can try to move the car slightly backwards and then forwards out of the rut. Use the highest gear you can.

Driving in snow

When falling snow reduces visibility, use your dipped headlights as you would in heavy rain or fog. Falling or freshly fallen snow need not cause too much difficulty, providing you remember to

Increase the gap between you and the vehicle in front, remembering to look in your mirror before slowing down

Test your brakes, very gently, from time to time, but be sure to look in your mirrors before braking.

Snow can pack behind the front wheels or around brake linkages under the car and so affect steering and braking

Be prepared to clear the windscreen by hand. Your wipers, even with the aid of the heater, may not be able to sweep the snow clear. Snow might collect and pack around your lights and indicators

Drive with care, even if the roads have been treated. Conditions can change over very short distances

Try to find out about weather and traffic conditions ahead by listening to travel bulletins on the radio and noting any information on the variable message signs.

Driving in icy conditions

Overnight freezing usually results in an icy surface, especially on less-used roads. Look for signs of frost on verges, etc.

It’s even more dangerous when the roads are just beginning to freeze or thaw. The combination of water and ice adds up to an extremely slippery surface.

Rain freezing on roads as it falls (black ice) is an invisible danger. When driving on ice

You need to keep your speed down

Treat every control – brakes, accelerator, steering, clutch and gears – very delicately

If it’s very cold, treat all wet-looking surfaces as though they’re frozen because they probably are. If the road looks wet but there’s no sound from the tyres, expect ice.

What to do, if stuck in the snow

OK so you have a snow shovel in your vehicle during winter, you do have one don’t you? Having one can literally mean the difference between life and death…

You should also have a vehicle emergency pack with essential survival items in case you have to spend the night in your car, or walk miles home in freezing weather.

Even if you have a snow shovel, if the road is frozen hard, even after digging out around the wheels, it can still be difficult to gain traction and get un-stuck.

In this situation there is a way you can get traction and get moving again.

It can also work even if you didn’t have a snow shovel, so couldn’t dig out first, but only if the snow isn’t too deep.

This tip will only really work on hard surfaces such as roads, driveways and car parks, but here’s what to do –

If there is snow and you have a snow shovel, dig out as much snow around the wheels as possible.

No snow shovel, then do this!

Take out the floor mats in your car, turn them upside down and place them in front and underneath the wheels which are spinning, this will obviously depend on whether your car is front or rear wheel drive.

Jump back in the car and try to drive forward slowly and steadily.

If you escape, be sure to run back and pick up your floor mats.

If your car simply moved over the floor mats and immediately got stuck again, you can
keep repeating the process and inch forward.

A good idea is to carry the following, a hot drink in a flask, emergency food like, self heating meal, energy bars, charged mobile phone, torch, extra warm clothing, a small tarp, water, pee container, cat litter, and a map.

Bleach/Acid attack-What to Do

Over the past four years, there has been a significant rise in acid attacks across the UK.

In 2016, there were 454 attacks compared to 216 in 2015 and 162 in 2012, according to the BBC.

While full figures haven’t been made available for this year, there has been several high-profile instances reported over the past couple of months alone. Last month, the Evening Standard reported that six people had acid thrown over them in London in just 24 hours.

The instances have become so prevalent that senior doctors have now waded in to warn bystanders that they can make a real difference to the victim if they act fast.

The first step, consultant emergency physician Johann Grundlingh and colleagues write, is to remove the victim from further exposure as soon as possible.

Irrigation of the affected area with copious amounts of water is vital to remove the chemical and should be performed as soon as possible to minimise the long term effects of scarring and need for surgical reconstruction,”.

Even when the victim is in the emergency department, it is important to continue washing off all the acid with water “starting at the area of contamination or the face or eyes”.

Here is further advice if you or someone you witness has suffered a chemical burn.

Remove the chemical while protecting yourself. Wear gloves or use a towel.

Remove contaminated clothing or jewellery to prevent further burning.

Rinse the burn immediately with a gentle steady stream of cool tap water for 10 minutes or more.

A shower can be used as can mild soap on skin.

You must protect your eyes when washing acid off your skin.

Loosely apply a dry bandage, gauze or clean cotton clothing.

You should seek emergency care if:

The person is showing signs of shock (fainting, pale or shallow breathing).

The chemical has burnt through the first layer of skin and blisters have formed

The burn covers an area more than three inches in diameter and if the burn goes all the way round a limb or involves the eyes, hands, feet, face, groin, buttocks or a major joint like the knee or elbow.

Helping or getting help as soon as possible is essential because acid burns can cause physical and mental distress to people for the rest of their lives.

Martial Law

Whitehall officials planning for the event of a no-deal Brexit are looking at the possibility of bringing in martial law to dispel potential civil unrest.

Ministers are examining how to use the powers available under the Civil Contingencies Act 2004 to impose travel bans, curfews, confiscate property and send out the armed forces.

The main theme in all the no-deal planning is civil disobedience and the fear that it will lead to death in the event of food and medical shortages,”

Although there is nothing that can replicate the scale of chaos threatened by a no-deal Brexit, which will be about a thousand times worse than the volcanic ash cloud crisis, this is about the closest example we have in modern British history.

The only other thing that would be comparable would be something like a major Europe-wide war. A colossal act of self-harm.

What is Martial Law

Martial law is the imposition of direct military control of normal civilian functions of government, especially in response to a temporary emergency such as invasion or major disaster, or in an territory.

Martial law can be used by governments to enforce their rule over the public, as seen in the following countries..

Such incidents may occur after a Thailand in 2014, and Egypt in 2013 when threatened by popular protest (China, Tiananmen Square 1989, 2009’s Iran that led to the takeover by Revolutionary Guards, to suppress political opposition (Poland in 1981); or to stabilize insurrections or perceived insurrections (Canada, The October Crisis of 1979.

Martial law may be declared in cases of major natural disasters; however, most countries use a different legal construct, such as a state of emergency.

Let’s pretend that the UK has been placed under MARTIAL LAW; that is, the “suspension” of the legal process.

Curfews, rationing of basic goods, enforced relocations, confiscation of firearms and supplies, and summary arrest/execution by soldiers, paramilitary police and other jack booted types wielding assault rifles.

Never take the government’s word at face value-except when they tell you that they’ll kill you.

Government and its components of career politicians, bureaucratic vermin, and their agents of enforcement, the SS ninja wannabes, have survived on illusion and lies, and for a lot longer than you’d think. It’s the very nature of the job; being part of an empire wrapped in the cloak of British political traditions of Freedom, that corrupts.

All that power, attracting the most venal along with the most patriotic to defend Britian.

All that license under ever mutable law written by money whores to lie, steal, embezzle, blackmail, extort, poison, torture, enslave, murder.

Is it any wonder then, that such human scum would get together and work “the system” to set themselves up as kings, dispensing with the pretty coverings of Constitutional limitations that trip their crimes like a prom dress?

They take as much as they can, while keeping YOU ASLEEP, AS YOU LET YOURSELF BE SEDUCED AND PUT ASLEEP BY THEIR FELLOW TRAVELERS IN THE MEDIA AND CORPORATE BOARDROOMS.

If you’re prohibited from having an item that helps you survive, get the item, AND KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT.

If you’re prohibited from having extra food, medicine, guns (no brainer) then you will CACHE your prohibited items in a place where they won’t easily be found.

One idea is to store “whatever” in seal tight waterproof containers in remote wooded areas, known

ONLY TO YOU!

Firearms are metallic; they can be detected by metal detectors unless you store them deep underground or in a place they won’t think of looking right away, like sealed in wider metallic tubes, away from your property.

And if you by chance acquire or keep firearms knowing HOW TO USE THEM (sight alignment, trigger squeeze) and RELOADING AMMUNITION will be mandatory.

Remember OPSEC, now is them time to embrace the concept, refrain from using social media to gloat about your brexit preps, or what type of weapons you may or may not have.

Simply treat Martial Law, if it is imposed as just another threat to you and your family. After all they cannot lock us ALL up, can they?

Avoiding Civil Unrest

Civil Unrest has occurred in pockets across the country over the past few years and is perhaps
one of the more likely scenarios that could adversely affect us in the future.

It’s possible that we could see more protests and riots like those organized in Ferguson, here in the UK.

We only have to look back to the Mark Dugon incident   Other widespread civil unrest could be caused by financial inequities or collapse, food shortages, loss of confidence in government, BREXIT or storms that leave people homeless.

 Or at least that is our perception, I however am aware of under hand police tactics used to infiltrate groups of peaceful protesters and stepping the level of protest up to and including violence, therefore justifying the police taking action to disperse what was planned to be a peaceful law abiding protest.

Of course there is always the chance of peaceful protests turning violent because of outside agitators that flock to any event where they think they can run amok.

These anarchists are the cause of much of the violence we see on TV at what would otherwise be peaceful protests.

While civil unrest is something that can strike any part of the country it is perhaps the most
straightforward to avoid.  In the past we have seen civil unrest in large or even medium sized cities but it has not spread to the suburbs.

On a few occasions there may have been minor fights between picketers in small towns
but nothing like we saw in London or the Bradford riots.

So how exactly do you avoid getting swept up in any type of civil unrest?

Having lived in Northern Ireland during the height of the troubles I can saw that I have seen
many street riots but avoided many, many more by simply staying away from their location, going around it or putting of travelling that day until things had calmed down.

Remember in an emergency, population density is your enemy.

Secondly, keep an eye on the local and national news.

Civil unrest occurs most commonly from a planned protest or event.  If you hear there will be protests, or even a “peaceful march” in a particular location you should avoid those areas completely.

If you were planning on going into the city for a business meeting or to shop simply reschedule it
for another day or better location outside the city.

Simply staying away from locations that are likely to flare up with protests is not difficult.

Avoiding flash flooding for example that’s bearing down on you is much tougher to do…

If for some reason you find yourself in a place that is quickly becoming a hot spot you should
leave the area immediately and by any means possible.

If that means leaving a car behind and walking out to a safer spot then that may be the way
to go.

Don’t think that vehicle glass offers you any kind of defence.

A heavy tool or large rock makes quick work of it.

There is always the possibility that civil unrest could become more widespread than it has in the
past.

If that is the case you should have plans in place to fortify your home I recommend using the

plywood you should have stored in your garage and covering up any vulnerable windows.

The use of firearms in a situation like this is something that needs to be carefully considered and researched. “weapons” is your choice and you will have to justify your actions at a later date.

Personally I would rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

So, while there are many disaster scenarios that we can do very little to avoid (although we can
still prep and plan for them) civil unrest is one situation that with good
situational awareness we can avoid altogether.

Choosing Game

Choosing and cooking game isn’t difficult with a few guidelines and a little information about Game.

Game is the term for wild animals and birds hunted and caught for food. 

Game has been a favourite British food forever, as it was once the main source of meat for many being wild and more importantly, free. Today many animals and birds, which were once wild, are now raised on farms including quail, deer and rabbit.

Game falls into two types; feathered and furred.

The season for wild feathered game starts officially on the 12th August, known as the Glorious 12th, and runs through to late February; furred game from August 1st until late April. Dates vary throughout the UK and Ireland for different types of Game and precise details can be found on the
Shooting UK website.

Buying Game

Many supermarkets now sell oven-ready game with cooking instructions but if you want to know more about where your meat came from then it is best to go to a specialist game dealer.

A game dealer will be able to tell you where and when the bird or animal was shot and advise on cooking methods.

Knowing the age of the game is very important, as this will determine the cooking method. Young birds can be roasted whereas older birds are better suited to a casserole or pie.

If you are lucky to have been given a brace of birds, young birds if un plucked will have smooth legs, and the beak and feet will still be pliable.

Fresh game can only be bought in season unless frozen, whereas farmed game is not subject to the seasons and can often be bought year-round.

Farmed game is tenderer and less gamey in flavour than from the wild; which you choose is down to personal preference.

Hanging Game

Birds and animals caught in the wild have a tendency to be dry and tough and the way to counteract this is to hang them.

Hanging tenderizes the meat and allows flavour to develop.

The test of when a bird or animal had been hung sufficiently used to be waiting until the head and tail feathers fell off, or maggots appeared in the gut, is no longer used – thank goodness.

Ripeness is now judged by the smell. A high bird will smell powerfully gamey; a bird that is rotten
smells bad, as any meat that has gone off.

Pheasant, partridge and grouse should be hung by the neck, wildfowl including geese by the feet.

This helps the meat to mature slowly and retain moisture – very important to avoid the game being dry when cooked.

We have about two months left to obtain some game; quite often game butchers will offer a deal on locally shot game, my local butcher has an offer of 10 oven ready pheasants for only £20.

But I ask you, if you have not tried it to do so this year, you will not regret it.

Campfire Honey Pheasant

2 pheasant breasts, skinned
1 teaspoon salt
4 tablespoons butter or margarine
1 cup clover honey

Rub salt over pheasant breasts.

Place breasts on a grill over hot coals.

Brush on mixture of melted butter and honey.

Cover, repeating process until honey forms golden glaze over meat.

Cook until well done—usually between 10-20 minutes.

Quick Camp Honey Pheasant is great when served with potatoes and onions fried in a skillet over the campfire. Serves 2.

Eating Crows and Some Recipes

I think most people have a natural prejudice that has prevented most crow hunters from even considering this bird as wild game.

My experience is that the mere mention of dropping these birds on the menu brings a series of comments from my mates as if I had just suggested stir frying up a batch of common sewer rats.

And if you ever make the mistake of sharing these thoughts with a non-hunter, be prepared for the same reaction.

This is a shame since, properly prepared, the members of the Corvid family are as tasty as most other game birds and even tastier than some.

Besides, with crow populations as high as they are, what an untapped resource we have at our disposal.

Historically, crows, as well as other non-songbird species have been common fare. Remember “four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie”?

Our revulsion seems to centre around the fact that the crow and its close relatives are scavengers and therefore unfit to eat.

Well, as far as pigs and chickens are concerned, you just wouldn’t believe what these supermarket critters will stick in their mouths.

Seafood? You honestly don’t want to know what goes into a some shellfish before it ends up on that expensive seafood platter. I suppose the same goes for lobsters. The list goes on.

In short, it’s really just our cultural prejudice that limits our possibilities. You know, maybe crow meat just needs some clever marketing terminology.

Look what they did for Sweet Breads and Escargot…

Field Preparation

It will come as little surprise to anyone that even the biggest crow doesn’t make much of a meal.

However, the fact that it is often possible to take large numbers at a time can compensate for this.

Since a morning shoot can easily net from 10 to 100 birds, you want to limit the amount of time necessary to clean each bird.

Put out of your head any idea of plucking a crow like you would a goose or duck.

Besides the breast meat, there just isn’t enough edible meat on a crow to make it worthwhile.

Using this technique, you can extract the best meat of a crow within a minute or two with very little mess.

Lay the crow on its back in front of you with its head pointed to the right.

Take a finger and locate where the breast bone meets the upper abdomen.

With a sharp knife, make a cut across the crow (wing to wing) below the breast bone.

Don’t be concerned about cutting too deep, no edible meat will be damaged with this cut.

Holding the birds feet with your left hand, place 2 or 3 fingers under the skin where the cut was made and pull in opposite directions. The skinless breast meat should now be exposed.

Take the knife again and separate each breast half away from the bone starting in the middle and working outward.

You should end up with 2 lime sized pieces of crow breast. Discard the remains properly.

The meat can now be frozen, marinated or freshly prepared.

Recipes

Here are some recipes. Feel free to try these or to experiment with your own creation.

There is no reason why any recipe for dove, quail or grouse to be found in a wild game cookbook would not work just as well.

Then you can decide whether to tell your guests what went into the recipe before or after they have finished. Bon Appetite!!

Pre-Cooking Preparation

You can use this method with crows, coots, diver ducks and just about any fowl that may have a strong flavour.

Use as many breasts as you decide to grill and soak them from 2 hours to overnight in salt water then thoroughly rinse and dry the breasts.

Then use your favourite brand of Idressing and put enough to coat the bottom of a container you can put a lid on and put a layer of breasts, a layer of dressing, and keep layering till all the breasts are in the container.

Finally, top off with dressing and put in fridge overnight. The next day they will be tender and tasty.

Pan Fried Crow

Ingredients

2 eggs

seasoned bread crumbs or flour

oil or bacon grease

Preparation

Remove breast meat from as many crows as desired. Beat with meat mallet (for tenderizing).

Dip the pieces in beaten egg and then in bread crumbs or flour. Fry in oil in hot skillet. Leave inside a tad pink if you like that sort of thing.

The Big5 Sauces Review

Firstly, I have to say that it is very unusual indeed for me to actually like every product in a range of sauces, I mean there is always one that is too Sharpe, fruity, strong etc. but with the Big5 sauces I have found the one complete sauce range that I love, and each one was a different culinary treat.

Having the first, meant that I could not wait to try the rest, and they did not let me down.

The Durban Curry is synonymous with the well known Bunny Chow, which is traditionally a spicy tomato based mutton curry served in a hollowed out bread bowl. 

This tasty cooking sauce is packed with flavour and has a good balance of spiciness that will not disappoint.

This was the first one I tried and I was going to vote it the one I liked the best, that is until I tried the others.

It is quite possibly the tastiest curry sauce I have ever eaten, if your only experience of curry is an Indian one, then you MUST try the Durban curry, as it is nothing like an Indian curry.

Its packed full of flavour and is best served as a lamb dish as is recommended on the jar. I wish I had had double the amount as I just wanted to carry one eating this wonderful dish, it is Gluten free and vegan.

Secondly was the Fruity Malay Curry, it was oozing fruity flavours on my taste buds, and combined with chicken fillets and rice is was the complete meal. 

But the flavours were not over the top, how do they do it, its just right, my taste buds say so.

The fruity Cape Malay Curry sauce is a household name in southern Africa. The blend of fruit and aromatic spices make it a winning formula when cooked with chicken, pork, beef or lamb.

Cape Malay cuisine has its origins in South-East Asia and the Cape Malays are well known for their culinary expertise. It is also gluten free and vegan.

Next was the Roast Garlic & Chilli Paste, now this little gem lasts the longest, as unlike the others “used in one meal”, and is also vegan.

This one can be used more than once as you put 30g and a cup of olive oil into a container mix them up and then put your meat in and marinade for at least an hour, I did mine overnight, using cubed beef.

Man the taste was fantastic, spicy, of garlic and with a hint of chilli too. 

The paste had taken on an orangey shiny look in which even my eyes told me this is going to be good, and it bloody was. I have more taste explosions planned for what is left in the jar.

This is Big 5's very own Roast Garlic & Chilli paste. By using the freshest Dutch Chillies and the highest quality garlic cloves, we created a fusion of heat and intense flavours to spice up every day cooking.
When mixed with some oil, the Paste makes a fantastic marinade for spicy chicken wings, steaks and ribs. 

Lastly, and as they say not least was the Zingy BBQ Sauce, well not having the weather for BBQ's it was to the grill I turned and with great success I can tell you.

I bought a load of spare rib individually cut and grilled them for 20mins then covered them in the Zingy BBQ Sauce for a further 20 mins.

If you want to turn bland pork ribs into finger licking good, (literally) then this is the sauce for you.

This has to be the most sweet and spicy offering from Big5 Sauces, or at least tastes that way on what would normally be boring pork rib.

I loved them and they did not last long, oh!, they is enough in the bottle for more than  one rtay of ribs, yummy.

I did not know that

The US military once developed nukes that were small enough to fit into backpacks and trained suicide squads to carry them into battle.

Army chiefs created the special atomic demolition munitions – or SADMs – during the Cold War with the aim of using them against Russia if war broke out in Europe.

Teams of soldiers were trained to parachute into battle wearing nukes on their backs, before taking out strategic targets such as damns, railway bridges and arms dumps.

There was just one problem: The blast radius was so large that it would be virtually impossible for the troops to run away fast enough once the fuse had been set, making it a suicide mission.

Mark Bentley, from Wisconsin, volunteered for one of the units and said the soldiers were well aware of the risks.

He told the Army Times ‘The Army is not going to set a bomb like that and run away and leave it, because they don’t know if someone else would get a hold of it.

‘They have to leave troops there to make sure it’s not stolen or compromised, and that would just be collateral damage.

‘You didn’t go out with the thought that it was anything other than a one-way mission. If you’re Bruce Willis, you get away, but I ain’t Bruce Willis.’

Isn’t it strange that now we are trying to prevent our enemies from trying to do the very same thing.

The Underwater Russian Threat

On last weeks show I mention that Putin was not the only threat in relation to nuclear threats, as I was referring to nuclear accidents etc.

But listen to this new threat, we when I say new, that is because the MSM has only told us.

Moscow is set to deploy more than 30 underwater drones capable of carrying a two megaton nuclear warhead, which could obliterate Western ports, according to Russian state media.

Four submarines fitted with the torpedo drones, named Poseidon, will join the Northern and Pacific Russian fleets, state news agency Tass reports.

Each submarine can fit eight Poseidons, designed specifically to destroy ‘enemy navy bases’ and able to travel at up to 70 knots.

A ‘special-purpose nuclear-powered submarine’ currently under construction at the Sevmash Shipyard in Severodvinsk, a port city on Russia’s White Sea, will be one of the Poseidon carriers, Tass said.

Last year, Russian state media claimed the Navy will be able to ‘mount various nuclear charges on the ‘torpedo’ of the Poseidon multipurpose seaborne system, with the thermonuclear single warhead to have the maximum capacity of up to two megatonnes in TNT equivalent.’

Speaking last month, Putin said on Wednesday that Russia would deploy its first regiment of hypersonic nuclear-capable missiles this year, saying the move meant his country now had a new type of strategic weapon.

Yes its politics, and yes they change hourly, but the fact is that there might be shortages, street protests, riots, troops on the streets, road blockages, yellow vest demonstrations, and these alone would prevent shop and fuel deliveries getting through and that’s without any border problems that may or may not happen.

I advise you to simply prepare just in case.

Think of tinned foods, pasta, water, heating, lighting, keeping warm in your home, having a GHB in your car, just in case you cannot get home.

Let’s hope that nothing happens or changes and that it was all project fear.

Feds admit they can’t protect electrical grid from terror

A new federal report, “Surviving a catastrophic Power Outage” warns that the United States’ response plans and resources would be hugely “outmatched” by a catastrophic power outage, which could leave society in disarray and many people dead.

“We found that existing national plans, response resources, and coordination strategies would be outmatched by a catastrophic power outage,” said the report, which was released days ago.

“Significant public and private action is needed to prepare for and recover from a catastrophic outage that could leave the large parts of the nation without power for weeks or months, and cause service failures in other sections – including water and wastewater, communications, transportation, healthcare, and financial services – that are critical.”

WND has reported for years on the threat of an electromagnetic pulse attack, or EMP, from a solar flare or a nuclear explosion above the nation.

The President’s National Infrastructure Advisory Council was set up right after 9/11 to advise on practical strategies for industry and government to reduce the many risks from such an event.

But the study looked at not just EMP but at any major power-system failure. And it comes just as the threats of terrorist attacks on the electric grid are rising.

PJMedia reported the newest terror threat on the power grid.

“The image shows a faceless figure in a black hoodie with the Islamic State flag holding a bomb with a lit fuse with transmission towers and lines in the background. Along the power lines is the phrase ‘Just Terror’ – the ISIS slogan for lone jihadist operations – and blood-spattered ground,” the report said. “The poster directs jihadists to ‘make a surprise for the Crusaders.’

“The infrastructure threat is uncommon in ISIS propaganda, which has focused more on knife, vehicle or gun attacks in crowded areas such as festivals or music venues. Suggested targets have ranged from well-fortified locations, such as the U.S. Capitol or UN Security Council, to soft targets with little symbolic significance,” PJMedia reported.

“At the end of last month, another ISIS-allied media group encouraged jihadists to ‘kill the infidels in ways which no one else ever used’ including ‘electricity’ among methods such as snakes, poison gas, poisoned arrows, and wild animals.”

The new NIAC report was based on interviews with dozens of senior leaders and experts, as well as an extensive review of studies and statutes.

The team recommends that the nation “design a national approach to prepare for, respond to, and recover from catastrophic power outages that provides the federal guidance, resources, and incentives needed to take action across all levels of government and industry and down to communities and individuals.”

Then, the report says, leaders need to improve understanding of “how cascading failures across critical infrastructure will affect restoration and survival.”

So what about the UK, are we better protected from the effects of EMF.

You guessed it, NO we are not.

A nuclear device detonated up to 500 miles above the earth’s surface could generate an electro-magnetic pulse (EMP) with a “devastating” effect on power supplies, telecommunications and other vital systems, the Commons Defence Committee said.

It warned that countries such as Iran – which is resisting international pressure to end its nuclear programme – and even eventually some “non-state actors” could acquire the technology to mount such an attack, in a scenario akin to the plot of the 1995 James Bond film ‘GoldenEye’.

Terrorists could also build a “crude” non-nuclear EMP weapon, with the power to cause disruption over a more limited area.

But despite the vulnerability of the UK to such an attack, the committee accused the Ministry of Defence of appearing “complacent” and “unwilling to take these threats seriously”.

It said ministers should start work on “hardening” the infrastructure to protect against an EMP attack “as a matter of urgency”.

That my friends was in 2012.

James Arbuthnot, chairman of the defence select committee, called on key infrastructure to fit ‘hardened’ microchips resistant to EMP attack.

“I personally believe that it is quite likely to happen, because it is a comparatively easy way of using a small number of nuclear weapons to cause devastating damage.

“The consequences if it did happen would be so devastating that we really ought to start protecting against it now. Our vulnerabilities are huge.

He told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “It would have a far more devastating impact to use a nuclear weapon in this way than to explode a bomb in or on a city. It would, over a much wider area, take out things like the National Grid on which we all rely for almost everything. It would take out the water system and the sewage system. Rapidly it would become very difficult to live in cities – within a matter of days.”

“The defence is to build up the resilience of the electronic infrastructure by gradually replacing the incredibly delicate and vulnerable systems and chips and connections with the more hardened systems that are available at a not very expensive price during your routine maintenance.

“I wish the Government would address this with rather more energy, cohesion and focus.”

It is not only EMP weapons that have the power to wreak havoc. The committee said a naturally occurring “space weather event” caused by changing conditions in the sun’s atmosphere could have a similar effect.

The most severe example – known as the Carrington event after the astronomer who observed it – occurred in 1859 when a massive solar flare sent enormous electrical currents surging through telegraph systems causing shocks to telegraph operators and setting fire to papers.

So there you have it, the only way to protect your electronic items is build your own Faraday cage.

Any Beer Stew

Any BEER beef stew is just the thing on those wintery cold days, the stew features beef, smokey bacon, onion, celery, carrots and more, all cooked and marinated in any beer you like and Worcestershire sauce for a couple of hours.

Now you have a choice pre cook at home and place portions into ziplock bags and at your campsite simply cook in the bags in boiling water until hot. And there is no washing up either.

Stew:

  • 2 lbs. stew meat/beef chunk

  • ¼ lb. applewood-smoked bacon

  • 1 onion, finely chopped

  • 1 stick celery, chopped

  • 2 carrots, peeled and chopped

  • 2 cloves garlic, thinly sliced

  • 2 turnips, peeled and diced

  • 2 parsnips, diced

  • 4 oz. tomato paste

  • 12 oz. Any Beer

  • 4 table spoons of beef gravy/sodium beef broth

  • 2 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 bay leaf

  • 3 sprigs thyme

  • chopped parsley

  • ½ lb of your fav mushrooms, chopped

Dumplings:

  • 1 ½ cups self-rising flour

  • ½ tsp. garlic powder

  • ¼ cup shortening

  • ½ cup shredded sharp cheddar

  • ⅔ cup milk

  • 1-2 tbsp. mixed fresh herbs, chopped

  • Make up this mix prior to setting off.

  • Directions:

  • Cook the bacon in a large pot over medium heat.

  • Remove the bacon from the pan and set it aside, but leave the grease in there.

  • Season the meat with salt and pepper and cook it in the pan until it’s browned.

  • Set the beef aside.

  • Cook the onion, celery and carrots in the same pan until soft. Add a bit of oil if needed.

        • Now add the tomato pasta and stir.

        • Pour the beer and Worcestershire into the pan and let it come to a simmer. Stir the entire time.

        • Place the beef back into the pot and add the beef stock, bay leaf and thyme.

        • Reduce to a simmer, cover and cook for 1 1/2 hours.

        • After the 1 1/2 is up add the carrot, parsnips, and turnips and let it cook for another half an hour, covered.

  • Make sure to also remove the bay leaf and thyme. If the entire stew is too thick, add more beef stock.

        • Toss in the mushrooms and cook for 10 mins, uncovered.

        • In a separate bowl, combine the flour and garlic powder. Add the shortening until the mixture looks like crumbs, then stir in the cheddar cheese and milk.

        • Turn the dough into small balls and throw them into the stew. Cover the pan and cook on medium/low heat for 25 minutes.

Homemade Cheese

What you will need

4 litres of whole milk, 1 pinch salt, 1 large lemon, juiced

What to do

1. Pour the milk into a large pan, and stir in a pinch of salt. Bring to a boil over medium
heat, stirring occasionally to prevent the milk from scorching on the bottom of the pan.

2. When the milk begins to boil turn the heat off then stir the lemon juice into the milk, the
milk will then curdle.

This may take 5 to 10 minutes.

3. Line a sieve with a cheesecloth, now pour the milk through the cloth to catch the curds.
What is left in the cheesecloth is the Farmer’s Cheese. The liquid is the whey.

 4. Gather the cloth
around the cheese, and squeeze out as much of the whey as you can. Then I find it best to suspend the cheese cloth over the sink for example.

5. When it has stopped dripping, I put it in an airtight container and put it in the fridge.

Survival Mistakes

Wilderness survival techniques are arguably a matter of life and death. Turning into a self-sufficient survivor does not happen at the snap of a finger.

It takes knowledge, proper gear, and preparation. By planning for the worst before it happens you could be saving your life and other’s.

According to some of the top wilderness survival websites, there are eight common mistakes that can cost you big in the wild. The first is no shelter, which really turns into a double barrelled mistake. If you do not have a proper shelter with you or lack the knowledge to build one with what is around you-you might be in trouble.

It is vital to create a shelter that keeps you dry and limits exposure to the elements, especially the wind.

The second biggest wilderness survival mistake is being caught without a working navigational tool. It is easy to get turned around in the middle of thick bushes and trees. A map and a compass are failsafe standards any wilderness adventurer should pack.

Thanks to technology, a GPS is a handy tool as well. GPS devices are small, compact, and generally able to work for a descent timebperiod if kept at full charge. Keep navigational tools with you at all times.

Learning how to utilize cardinal directions by the sun and stars is also
beneficial.

Another common mistake that can cost you is lack of knowledge and preparation.

How to signal for assistance

What is safe to eat and how to find it

How to build and maintain a fire

How to locate water and safely prepare it

Never underestimate the risk factor. The most innocent of outdoor excursions-fishing, hiking, hunting-can turn into a wilderness survival situation. Always be prepared.

Don’t be caught with the wrong clothing. A rule of thumb is to always dress in layers, making the outer layer warmer than what you should need. Research indicates that most hypothermia cases develop in temperatures over 40 degrees Fahrenheit thanks to lack of proper clothing.

Water is essential to survive.

The problem is finding drinkable water. Waterborne organisms can cause severe diarrhoea and vomiting, which increases dehydration. Carry a supply of pure drinking water along with the ability to filter water by boiling, chemical tablets, or filters.

Finally, be sure to have a signal plan and know how to create and maintain a fire. Almost any outdoor/camping supplier has sections dedicated to signal devices. Whistles, mirrors, high beam torches, and fire starting devices are all easy to carry signal devices. Couple these with learning how to create your own emergency signal by using trees, rocks, dirt, or even snow.

Fire is vital to wilderness survival. It can warm, protect, and heat food or boil water. You can even use it to signal for help.

Do not underestimate learning how to make and maintain a fire. Take time to prepare
for your outdoor excursions and you will be able to tackle whatever kinks come
your way.

When it comes to survival skills, the smallest of mistakes could have a huge impact on your ability to stay safe.

However, there are a few things which can help to avoid making such mistakes, and will ensure that your survival skills are as effective as possible.

If you find your survival skills being put to the test unexpectedly, then the natural reaction can be to panic.

However, this is often the worst thing you can do, as you need to be thinking as clearly as possible in such situations.

You might not be able to simply google ‘survival techniques’ whilst checking your facebook page and playing cheeky bingo, but if you have done your research, then you will already be well prepared.

You simply need to keep a clear head, and remember all the skills which you have learnt.

Often, people panic the most when it comes to putting up a shelter, and tend to rush the process. In actual fact, it is worth spending extra time making sure that your shelter is safe and secure, and unlikely to collapse without warning, OH! And water and wind proof as well.
