Post Brexit Food Shortages

Here is another very good reason to prep, to prepare enough supplies for your family as Brexit approaches.

Whilst the government has acknowledged the need to avoid a cliff-edge after Brexit day, a customs union in itself won’t solve the problem of delays at ports.

So to ensure supply chains are not disrupted and goods continue to reach the shelves, agreements on security, transit, haulage, drivers, VAT and other checks will be required to get systems ready for March 2019.

Britain’s food industry has warned that labour shortages after Brexit could leave over a third of its businesses unviable.

In a survey of the Farm to Fork supply from the Food and Drink Industry, 36% of businesses said they would be unable to adapt if they did not have access to EU labour after Brexit.

A severe labour shortage is becoming a realistic outcome in a sector dominated by European workers.

Thirty percent of the UK food and drink manufacturing workforce are European migrants, and the Brexit vote already appears to be deterring EU workers from moving in Britain.

I also thin k that food prices in the UK will increase if EU workers leave the country post Brexit, food and drink industry groups have already warned the government.

What should I be stocking up on?

Start with non-perishables – toilet rolls, cleaning stuff, toiletries. Plus some foods which last forever – sugar, salt, soy sauce, honey.

Then buy dried foods which last 5 – 10 years – rice, pasta, dried beans, oats. Think about how you’re going to store them.

Last buy tinned foods.

Don’t forget water.

Remember to rotate the perishables.

THE UK’s coming food shortages will make the nation’s allotment gardeners into the undisputed rulers of the country, experts have confirmed.

As rocketing prices and scarcity of produce become increasingly likely in the wake of Brexit, those with the ability to grow their own fruit and vegetables are poised to receive the universal adulation they always believed they deserved.

Perhaps it’s time to plough the lawn and start food planting instead.

People could be warned to ‘vary their diet’ if we leave the EU without a deal.

This was a recent MSM headline.

Well dear listener the article went on to say the following:

If we ‘crash out’ in March next year, current agreements on importing food will no longer stand, meaning there could be large scale disruption to food supply.

Don’t worry – ministers say we will have enough to subsist on (and who doesn’t love tinned sardines, Ryvita, and Kendal Mint Cake?)

However, we may have to change what we currently eat, as certain perishables become more difficult to get hold of.

Leaked plans shown to The Times show fruit from Spain and vegetables from the Netherlands might be among the goods affected if trade from the EU is limited or stricter checks are put in place.

They say government planners are looking at whether a point could come when people have to ‘vary their diet’.

Somehow, I don’t think that’s the kind of ‘varied diet’ that nutritionists have in mind.

The government is drawing up contingency plans for ‘no deal’ at a cost of £4 billion, as Theresa May’s withdrawal agreement looks unlikely to get through parliament.

Of course, a lot can change in three months, and we have to hope that Parliament gets things together enough to avoid a return to rationing.

But, with diet changes being talked about as a possible outcome, plenty of people have questions…

OK, fact, we will not starve without Spanish fruit or Dutch veg.

As for changing what we eat, well, we actually do that all the time, you know, we swap between tinned or frozen foods to fresh and back again. In the winter we eat pickled foods and we even store such foods and others to cover times when we may not have the opportunity to get out and buy fresh ones.

We British have a very varied diet and one that is not set in stone at all.

Whether you are a prepper or not, common sense dictates that you air on the side of caution and simply buy a little more of what you would have already bought, just in case.

If nothing happens then you have extra supplies that you can simply eat or even keep stored, your choice.

China and Russia have joined forces and are going ahead with controversial plans to heat and alter the Earth’s atmosphere.

This project, experts claim, has potential military applications as it can disrupt satellite communication, a distinct advantage in the event of war or espionage.

Charged particles, known as ions, create a reflective layer over a specific region of land and cause a satellite communications blackout.

The two superpowers have conducted several joint experiments which altered the chemical composition of the air high above Europe and China ans to expand the use of the technology.

The South China Morning Post reports that one experiment involved a region half the size of Britain (126,000 sq km/49,000 square miles) more than 310 miles (500 km) above Eastern Europe.

Vasilsursk, a small Russian town, experienced a spike of electricity which had ten times more negatively charged subatomic particles than nearby regions.

Further experiments included increasing the temperature of an ionised gas in the atmosphere by more than 100°C (212°F).

Electrons were sent into the sky by a specialist facility in Vasilsursk which was built during the cold war.

Military interest in the ionosphere is not new but technological advancements has made its manipulation possible.

Changing the ionosphere over enemy territory can disrupt or cut off communication with satellites, a distinct advantage in the event of war or espionage.

Changing the atmosphere has sparked further fears as theorists claim the technology may be used to modify weather patterns, cause natural disasters and even interfere with proper brain function.

Both the US and the Soviet Union developed sites to alter the ionosphere during the Cold War but China has redoubled these efforts and is now building its own.

Purportedly, the advanced facility in Sanya, Hainan will be able to manipulate the ionosphere over the entire South China Sea.

Some have raised concerns that this technology could be manipulated to modify weather and cause natural disasters, although most experts believe this is nothing more than a conspiracy theory,

Extra criticism has come in the shape of claims the radiation could affect the true function of human brains.

Dr Wang Yalu, an associate researcher with the China Earthquake Administration who took part in the study in June, rejected these claims.

‘We are just doing pure scientific research. If there is anything else involved, I am not informed about this,’ she said in an interview.

Basically if they “perfect” this as a weapon, which I believe is what they are attempting then the EMP weapon will be out of date.

It’s not just Putin or ISIS

The UK government secretly planned to dump the radioactive hulks of 22 nuclear submarines in the sea off north west Scotland, documents released by the National Archives reveal.

A survey for the Ministry of Defence (MoD) in 1989 identified six sites for “seabed storage” of defunct naval submarines near the islands of Skye, Mull and Barra for up to 60 years – and probably longer.

Detailed and highly confidential MoD studies concluded the plan was “feasible” and would “obviate the international problems which we would face were we to dispose of these vessels in international waters.”

According to one MoD official the aim was “to remove submarines from public view”. Another hoped that “everyone will forget about these submarines and that they will be allowed to quietly rot away indefinitely.”

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has recorded more than 500 safety mishaps with nuclear submarines on the Clyde since 2006 – half of them in the last four years.

UK defence minister, Stuart Andrew MP, has disclosed that there have been 259 “nuclear site event reports” for Trident submarines based at Faslane over the last 12 years. Over the same period there have been 246 safety events on nuclear-powered but conventionally-armed “hunter-killer” submarines berthed or docked at the naval base.

Overall 23 incidents were categorised as having a “high potential” for leaking radioactivity into the environment or within a submarine or building. Some 148 incidents were said to have a “moderate potential for future release or exposure”.

The weapons were being moved between Birmingham and London along the M40 when the convoy was forced to stop on the carriageway.

An escort vehicle travelling with the convoy, which was carrying four nuclear warheads, was forced to stop on the hard shoulder of the M40 near junction nine near Bicester at around 11am on Monday.

UK nuclear weapons convoys ‘have had 180 mishaps in 16 years’

Military convoys carrying nuclear weapons through Britain’s cities and towns have experienced 180 mishaps and incidents, including collisions, breakdowns and brake failures during the last 16 years, according to a report produced by a disarmament campaign.

The incidents catalogued in the report – based on official logs released under the Freedom of Information Act – include fuel leaks, overheated engines, clutch problems, and other mechanical faults in the convoys.

At other times, according to the report, the convoys went the wrong way, were diverted, and lost communications with commanders. The rate at which the incidents have occurred has risen in recent years, with 43 in the last three years.

Serious safety concerns’ over UK nuclear plant at Sellafield

AN investigation into the UK’s most hazardous nuclear site has revealed a host of ‘serious safety concerns’, including the risk of a radioactive plume spreading over western Europe.

The BBC Panorama programme highlighted potential risks at Sellafield, a nuclear fuel reprocessing and nuclear decommissioning site in north England.

Nothing about nuclear fuel production, or its use in what ever format is safe.

The Underground Bomb Shelter

Basically, an underground bomb shelter is an enclosed, sheltered room which has been built in such a way as to protect you from nuclear threats.

When I say sheltered, I mean “underground”.

At least 3 feet of soil rests above the shelter, shielding the occupants from radioactive fallout. The underground bomb shelter should be constructed in such a way as to provide maximum protection from a nuclear attack.

This primarily means you will need shielding from the blast wave and protection from radioactive fallout.

Unlike the Cold War era when we would have some warning of an attack, in today’s world where the greatest possibility of a nuclear explosion will be delivered via terrorists, you will not receive notice of an impending attack.

The unfortunate souls who are vaporized by a terrorist’s nuclear blast would probably be reserved to an area 1 mile in diameter.

The blast wave will move out so fast that people within 5 miles won’t have time to escape unscathed.

Those located 5 to 20 miles from the blast will probably see the mushroom cloud or panicking people and be able to make a hasty entrance into an underground bomb shelter in time to escape fallout hazards.

Many baby boomers (people in their 50s) will race to local fallout shelters once maintained by the Civil Defense plan but no longer stocked with supplies.

They are the ones who grew up doing monthly “duck and cover” drills in primary or secondary school.

The decision will improve their chances of receiving less radiation than most. But, many will die.

Within half an hour, most of us will probably know a nuclear strike has taken place, and when and where it happened.

Fallout charts will pepper the news and warn people in the predicted area.

Those of us who have built a shelter will have ample time to secure ourselves within the shelter.

Everyone else within the expected fallout zone will frantically pack their bags and hit the road in hopes of escaping the fallout, which could be falling 50 miles from ground zero an hour after the explosion.

The traffic jams will see large numbers of people exposed to the radiation within the fallout.

Those poor souls will be dead within hours.

Some people within the traffic jams will escape with their lives by heading in a direction perpendicular to the expected fallout zone.

If you are caught in a traffic jam, you have but minutes to make the decision to put the SUV in 4 wheel drive and head North or South – even if they have to cross a field.

For the most part, everyone caught in the fallout within the first 48 to 72 hours will die.

Those who survive the blast, which can be lethal up to 10 miles from ground zero, will survive the dangers of fallout if they are in an underground bomb shelter.

Where should my underground bomb shelter be placed?

Anywhere that makes it quickly accessible.

In certain situations, you may only have a few minutes to secure you and your family.

On the other hand, you may have a few hours.

This all depends on location of detonation, weather, and your distance from ground zero.

The problem is, no one knows exactly where the first attack will take place.

Therefore, it is recommended you choose a location near your home – preferably in your back garden.

The optimum location is one that has the underground bomb shelter situated deep enough to provide a 36-inch (or more) barrier between the shelter and the surface of the ground.

A location under the patio or garage you are thinking about building would be perfect. If you are building a new house, include space for an underground bomb shelter in your basement.

Just make sure you allow for the 36 inches of space below the ground floor.

How much warning time will I receive?

That depends on the type of attack.

If it comes via missile, you may get several minutes warning from the emergency response system (if the American military – NORAD – even puts out such a warning).

Most likely the UK’s first nuclear attack will come in the form of a “dirty bomb”, a 1 to 10 kiloton nuclear device.

In that case, you won’t have any warning about an impending explosion.

If you are close enough to ground zero and survive the explosion and blast wave, your warning will be obvious.

If you are some miles (10 or more) away, you’ll probably have at least a minute or two to prepare for fallout. Of course, everyone in the UK (and the world) will know about the attack within an hour.

Pine Needle Tea

I thought that would introduce you to a simple tea that is delicious, healthy and a great immune booster.

For those of you who are new to the world of plants, a safe and simple tea can be made from the common Pine trees that surround us.

Pine Needle Tea has long been a favourite of traditional and indigenous peoples, both for its refreshment and for its medicinal values.

You may not realize that Pine Needle Tea contains 4-5 times the Vitamin C of fresh-squeezed orange juice, and is high in Vitamin A.

It is also an expectorant (thins mucus secretions), decongestant, and can be used as
an antiseptic wash when cooled. So not only does it taste good, but it’s good
for you!

Each variety of pine has its own flavour to impart, so experiment and see which needles you like best. And feel free to mix and match!

Just remember that while all Pines are evergreens, not all evergreens are Pines! So head out to the local woods or park, positively identify your pine trees, bring back some needles and give this one a try!

Step-by-step Instructions for Making Pine Needle Tea:

Collect a small bundle of green needles, the younger the better. (A small handful will be plenty.)

Remove any of the brown, papery sheaths that may remain at the base of the needles. (They just pull right off.)

Chop the needles into small bits, about ¼ to ½ inch long.

For a Refreshing Tea:

Heat about a cup of water to just before boiling.

Bring water almost to a boil

Pour the hot water over about a tablespoon of the chopped needles.

Allow to steep (preferably covered) for 5-10 minutes, until the majority of needles have settled to the bottom of the cup. Enjoy your delicious tea!

For a Medicinal Tea:

(This process releases more of the oils & resins that contain the medicinal compounds, and tastes a little like turpentine.)

Bring about a cup of water to a full boil. Add approximately one tablespoon of chopped needles to the boiling water and cover. Allow the needles to boil in the water for 2-3 minutes.

Remove from heat and allow the tea to continue to steep, covered, until it is cool enough to drink. (Most of the needles should sink to the bottom.) Pour the tea into a mug, leaving the needles behind, and enjoy!

Drink this tea several times a day for maximum medicinal effect. (Make it fresh each time.

Enjoy your tea!

Prepper-Survivalist- What’s the Difference?

I would say that not all survivalists are preppers but all preppers are survivalists. Now having probabley confuced you even more, I shall continue.

Preppers prepare for a natural or man-made disaster that would remove the comforts of modern life for an extended period of time.

Here I am talking about an EMP/CME, Nuclear accident, attack, biological or chemical, floods, earthquakes, all types of bad weather etc. plus loads more.

I suggest that “everyone” is in fact a prepper whether they will admitt that or not. Anyone who has a spare wheel, first-aid-kit, umbrella, waterproofs, fire extinguisher or even a flashligh is preparing for something. The “prepper” as they have been portrayed in the media takes it a stage further that is all.

The prepper plans to be able to survive this SHTF or TEOTWAWKI event by having srote of water, food, weapons, ammo, medicines, fuel, etc.etc.

A prepper I would suggest is a single person looking after number one, or a family man/woman looking after his/her family and they focus only on that to the exclusion of others around them.

In fact their only focus is to acquire everything they would need to survive any disaster that affects them.

Any cross over between the prepper and the survivalist is to me quite obvious as if the prepper loses his/her stores then they too will have to survive on little if anything, in fact they would then by a survivalist, if that is of course, they had bothered to learn the relevant skills and knowledge.

In any case in the long term the prepper will use up all the stotes they had gathered and what will they do then? again the only option will by to revert to being a survivalist living on knowledge and learned skills.

The survivalist however in my opinion plans to survive using knowledge and skills gained from experience over a perion of time. The survivalist learns how to provide shelter, clean water, make fire, hunt, trap, fish, forage, cook, navigate etc.etc. with the minimum of equipment because survival situations happen when we are least prepared, or when we are miles away from our preps.

The Homesteader is a combination of both prepper and survivalist and is perhaps the ideal that all preppers and survivalist aim to be.

They are usually land owners, with a shelter of some type with access to water, crops, livestock, and preps made from the surplus of their production.

They know how to can, smoke, dry and to preserve their extra foods for another day. They have moved off grid in many cased thus removing their dependence upon the society and the system they have removed themselves from.

I hope this helps you understand and goes some way to answering your questions.

The Priorities of Survival

You have been making you way home during a man-made disaster involving economic collapse and during your trip home the roads were blocked with abandoned vehicles and you have taken refuge in the area around a lake.

You now know you have water, fish and small animals to sustain you BUT?

Now I like to think there are 7 Enemies of Survival and knowing the 7 Priorities of Survival will greatly increase your chances and abilities in surviving the aftermath of a disaster.

The first of the seven is a Positive Mental Attitude.

As attested by those who have survived both Man-Made, Natural Disasters and wilderness emergencies, a positive mental attitude is the most essential element in any survival situation.

The second of the seven is First Aid.

If any injury from the disaster is life threatening, such as rapid blood loss, first aid becomes the most important thing to do.

The third of the seven is Shelter.

Extreme cold or hot weather conditions make finding or building a shelter of top importance. At such times even painful but minor injuries must wait until shelter is available. This is even more urgent if night is approaching.

The forth of the seven is Fire.

Often, along with shelter, you will need a fire for warmth and signaling. Fuel should be secured and the fire started before dark.

The fifth of the seven is Signaling.

When you have taken the first steps in dealing with the emergency, you might need to prepare rescue signals depending on your situation.

The sixth of the seven is Water.

Under all circumstances, water is essential. You can live only a few days without it. Finding water is even more urgent when the weather is hot and dry.

And the seventh of the seven is Food.

A healthy person can live several weeks without food; it does not rate high as a survival priority.

Pick Your Training Ground

The first thing you’ll want to do is pick a spot where you’ll be practicing. Ideally this would be a place that is near your home, is accessible during both the day and night, and has the resources you need to practice the various survival skills. This will be your training ground.

Setting up Shelter

Whether you live in an arid, temperate, or cold environment, exposure is often the first cause of death for those caught in a wilderness-survival situation. For this reason, shelter will be the first step to take.

Choose your Shelter

If you’re new to wilderness survival, this step would be simply building a tent or setting up a tarp shelter. As you get comfortable with that you’ll want to move on to making a primitive shelter.

Since I cannot cover every shelter that is possible to build from the resource on your training ground, you’ll need to do some research in determining what type of shelter is best for your environment.

The key factors are that it keeps you protected from the elements (dry when wet, shaded when hot, warm when cold, etc.).

For example, I live in the North East — a place that abounds in trees and forest debris. My shelter of choice here is the debris hut which is basically a framework of sticks that is stuffed inside and out with leaves or other natural debris for insulation.

This will keep me both dry and warm without the need for a tarp or sleeping bag.

Build it

Chose you location and look up for widow makers.

Once you’ve chosen your shelter type, start building it. Again, this could be in one easy go (like setting up a tent) or if it requires normally an hour or two to build (like a primitive shelter) you must be aware of weather changes and loss of light.

Test it

Knowing how to build the shelter is only half of the process. Sleeping in a shelter you built is really the best teacher.

It will teach you to overcome the fear of being alone, the dark, as well as sleeping in something other than your bed.

In the case of a primitive shelter, it teaches you how best to insulate it, where to build it, what materials to use and so on.

If you don’t make it through the whole night, that’s fine. Take note of what needs to improve and use that for the next step.

Refine it and Retest

Now that you’ve tried it for a night, make the improvements to the shelter and try it again.

If you used a tent, this part might include putting down ground insulation to prevent ground chill, or even moving location for a more even surface.

Remember, a shelter will protect you from the elements take the time to make a good one.

Step 3: Finding, Collecting and Purifying Water

Dehydration is a major concern in not just arid environments but in cold environments as well. Since most publications say we cannot go for much longer than 3 days without water, this will be the next skill you will practice.

Finding Water and Collecting Water

The first part of this step is to find a source of water. This could be morning dew (in which case it is already purified), ice or snow, a body of water, a dried out river bed, setting up a solar still and so on.

Once you’ve found your water source, you’ll want to practice different means of collecting it such as soaking it up with a cotton shirt, long grasses, discarded bottles or cans that you find lying around and so on. In the beginning, use your own containers and as your skill grows you can practice making your own or finding field expedient ones.

Purifying Water

If the water you collected requires purifying then you’ll need to practice how to do that. This could be practicing using a commercial filter, water-purification tablets, or fire.

Finding and Preparing Food

Most of the time you spend ia a Survival situation is taken up in this step. If you’re a beginner, you’ll skip finding food and just practice outdoor food preparation and cooking over a fire.

But as you run out of your food stores, or arrive in a survival situation without any food you will need to start gathering and preparing wild edibles, procuring meat through trapping, fishing, hunting and so on.

It also includes gutting, skinning, cleaning and preparing the animal, cooking it, and of course, eating it.

Using a trapping example, you might spend an hour one day making a set of snares or building primitive traps.

Then when you have some time, you’ll set them up (be sure you have the necessary permits) and check on them regularly to see if you caught anything.

If you don’t succeed, take note of any improvements you can make (different bait, different location etc.) and make those changes the next time.

When you do catch or hunt something, you’ll be practicing skinning, cleaning, and preparing the animal to be eaten.

Since you’ve already know how to make fire you can simply set up a fire and cook it that way.

I would like to think that whatever survival aid you bring with you to help you survive, you will during the 42 days find a natural low tech way to provide the same result.

From Camping Mode to Survival Mode

Your camping gear is the starting point for your survival plan.

History is a magnificent tool for understanding the present but it is also great at foretelling the future.

If there is one thing you can accurately say about history it is that it will repeat. Peace and war, feast and famine, prosperity and depression, all cycle as random eddies in the river of time.

Thus it is prudent to consider that a desperate situation is not only possible but, if we believe history, quite likely.

This realization mandates developing a mentality and a plan that prepares us for the ability to simply surviving.

What happens if your town has five fire engines and your house becomes the sixth fire burning? Unless you are willing to fight the fire you are just plan out of luck.

So self sufficiency is the way we must learn to think in order to survive.

Survival at Home

Perhaps you have seen the movie “Contagion” where a really bad and untreatable virus spreads throughout the world.

Much of what is enacted in the movie is, in fact, how I think governments would handle such a situation.

Schools and businesses would be simply closed and you might even find yourself restricted to your own home.

This would put us at the mercy of government emergency services.

What happens when the governments’ survival resources run out or are stretched beyond the limit of their capabilities?

Desperate people do desperate things.

If conditions deteriorate to this point, we may need to “get out of Dodge”, so to speak.

Head for the hills.

Here is where preppers and survivalists, in fact campers in general have a decided advantage over the standard population.

In a minimal sense we have to configure for survival every time we just go camping. Whether you are setting up for a weekend trip or a two week one you will have had to addressed these basic survival needs:

water

food

protection from the elements

Thus all you have to do is add a food and water stash to your basic camping equipment inventory and you have the core of a survival plan put together.

Choose a couple of good spots to locate your survival camp away from built up areas, as these places will most likely be chaotic.

Again, desperate people do desperate things so get away from the masses.

Gather the tribe.

Plan where your family and selected friends will be when things start falling apart.

They can meet you there where you can pool resources and efforts.

The wolf pack mentality is very useful when in the survival mode.

Setup your survival base camp in a familiar out of the way spot near water ( have a purifier) and natural food sources.

Having the means, knowledge and ability to protect yourself and your loved ones maybe essential to your collective survival.

In the mean time:

Consider learning the following skills:

How to identify and prepare natural foods in your area.

How to start a fire without matches.

How to hunt and fish.

How to shoot and defend yourself.

I know it’s ugly to think about but remember what history has taught us about the dark side of human nature.
