Survival Skills

Acquiring survival skills is an on-going process that will last for your entire life.

There is always more to learn and experience, which is part of the fun of being a survivor.

As your survival expertise grows the knowledge and abilities you gain are often useful in other areas.

For example survivors prepare ahead of time, and they are experts in the art of ingenuity and inventiveness.

Excellent attributes for anyone.

The possible environments and situations you could find yourself in are in numerable.

Although each situation has its particular requirements for successfully surviving, in the final analysis it is mastery of five basic survival skills that are essential.

Proficiency and preparedness in these 5 basic skills will give you the edge and put you on your way toward becoming a talented survivor.

Knowing how to build a fire is the best survival skill you can have.

Fire provides warmth ,light, and comfort so you get on with the business of survival.

Even if you do not have adequate clothing a good fire can allow you to survive in the coldest of environments.

Fire keeps away the creatures that go bump in the night and so you can have the peace of mind and rest you need. And that is not all.

Fire will cook your food and purify your water, both excellent attributes when you want to stay healthy when potential disease causing organisms are lurking about.

Fire will dry your clothing and even aid in the making of tools and keeping pesky insects at bay.

But even that is not all. Fire and smoke can be used for signalling very long distances.

Always have at least two, and preferably three, ways of making a fire at you immediate disposal.

With a lighter, a fire steel and a magnesium rod you should be able to create a fire anytime anywhere no matter how adverse the conditions.

So the lesson here is to learn the art of fire craft, Practice and become an expert.

Your ability to create a fire is perhaps the most visible mark of an experienced survivor. I recommend that you practice in your back garden in all weather, as if you cannot light a fire there how will you light one when it really matters.

Shelter protects your body from the outside elements. This includes heat, cold, rain, snow, the sun, and wind.

It also protects you from insects and other creatures that seek to do you harm.

The survival expert has several layers of shelter to think about. The first layer of shelter is the clothing you choose to wear.

Your clothing is of vital importance and must be wisely chosen according to the environment you are likely to find yourself in.

Be sure to dress in layers in order to maximize your ability to adapt to changing conditions.

The next layer of shelter is the one you may have to build yourself, a lean-to or debris hut perhaps.

This is only limited by your inventiveness and ingenuity. If the situation requires, your shelter can be insulated with whatever is at hand for the purpose.

Being prepared, you may have a space blanket or tarp with you, in which case creating a shelter should be relatively easy.

Before you have to make a survival shelter for real, be sure to practice and experiment with a variety of materials and survival scenarios on a regular basis.

Should the need arise you will be glad you did.

By signalling to make contact with people who can rescue you without having to be in actual physical contact with them.

There are a variety of ways to signal for help. These include using fire and smoke, flashlights, bright colour clothing and other markers, reflective mirrors, whistles, and personal locator beacons.

Three of anything is considered a signal for help: 3 gunshots, 3 blows on a whistle, three sticks in the shape of a triangle.

In a pinch, your ingenuity in devising a way to signal potential help could very well save your life.

Whenever you plan an excursion be sure to always bring extra food and water

Having more on hand than you think you need will give you that extra measure of safety should something happened and you have to stay out longer than anticipated.

You can go without food for a number of days, but living without water for even a few days will cause your efficiency to drop dramatically.

I have gone without water for 24 hours, you try it as it is not pleasant.

If at all possible, boil any water you find in order to kill disease organisms that maybe in even the cleanest looking water.

Filtering or chemically treating water is second best.

The most basic step would be to pour the water through any cloth material like a T-shirt for example.

If you cannot filter and or purify water then drink it, but upon rescue report this to a doctor as it will take several days before stomach bug will cause you problems.

Always bring along your first aid kit and a space blanket. Most injuries you are likely to encounter in the wilderness are relatively minor scrapes, cuts, bruises, and burns.

Larger injuries are going to need better facilities than that which you have at your disposal, which means you will need outside help.

Panic is your number one enemy when you are in any emergency situation, be it injured, lost, or stranded.

What you need in these situations is first aid for the mind.

Think STOP:

Sit

Think

Observe

Plan

Your best defence in any emergency is your ability to think and make correct decisions.

Building a fire is often the beginning of first aid for the mind.

Doing so will keep you busy and provide an uplift from the warmth, light and protection fire provides.

The expert survivals kills and know-how you have accumulated through practice and experience will serve you well.

When the real thing comes along, you will be prepared and adept at staying alive.

Where others have perished, as a survivor you will know you can make it.

And that is a good feeling to be sure.

Remember the more you have in your head the less you have to carry on your back.

Chembayo – Chemical / Biological Escape Mask

This respiratory protective device is designed for evacuation in case of an emergency involving weaponized chemical and biological agents.

The CHEMBAYO mask provides users with short-term respiratory protection against low concentrations of various toxins, with an emphasis on protection against nerve and blood agents, combined with HEPA filtration capabilities (P3) that filter out particles and aerosols, greatly reducing respiratory exposure.

Recommended for

Defence and Military

Emergency Services

Law Enforcement Agencies

Preppers and Survivalists

During my classroom lessons and my Nuclear Survival Masterclass I showed this super escape mask and a few people tried it on.

This simply showed how easy it is to put on and how little time it takes to do so.

One person claimed it was claustrophobic, but then said, actually it’s not bad now I am used to it.

The fact is that when, and I say when, a biological, chemical or radioactive terror attack occurs and it will. I will be totally reassured by having the Durham mask on my belt.

As I know that when it is needed it will simply work, it will save my life, and you cannot ask more than that.

Small Game Hunting Strategies

I have really concentrated on which techniques and tricks to employ to harvest grey squirrels at certain periods of the season. Give these tips a try in your area, you may find your hunting success and pleasure really intensifies!

EARLY SEASON

(SEPTEMBER- EARLY OCTOBER)

As the squirrel season starts, I totally concentrate on the feeding pattern of the squirrel. My favourite technique is to SLOWLY stalk through the woods, LISTENING for falling debris from feeding squirrels in the trees.

Beech trees are my first target, so a little preseason scouting to locate productive trees will pay off in dividends.

When I hear evidence of an overhead squirrel, I immediately look for movement of the game.

If all goes well, the sun will be right and the falling particles will be easily seen, giving away the squirrel’s location.

From this point the stalk is on.

Don’t hurry your shot! If you move slowly, avoiding downed branches and their tell-tale “snap” the squirrel will be busy feeding and pay no attention to you. Don’t forget, the early season canopy of leaves will work in your favour as well..

If the action is slow, I resort to calling to the squirrels to liven up the forest.

MID SEASON (MID OCTOBER – EARLY NOVEMBER)

By now, the beech nuts have gone and I have to concentrate on another food source… corn! I set up for action now as opposed to my stalking technique.

Obviously, I am going to select hunting grounds that are proximate to cut corm fields. A typical set up is near a hedgerow between hardwoods and the corn itself. Hunters can attempt to do some quick scouting by looking for fallen corn husks or squirrels tracks in snow if any is present.

From here it is a waiting game.

When a squirrel is shot, stay put because more squirrels will often be following in pursuit of the corn.

LATE SEASON (DECEMBER-FEBRUARY)

If you are still pursuing squirrels at this point, use the snow to your advantage. Look for abundant tracks near tree bases so you know where the busiest section of woods will be.

It is best to be hunting at day break, as squirrels are said to be most active from dawn to mid-day and spend the rest of the day in sleep.

SQUIRREL CALLING… DO THOSE THINGS REALLY WORK?

Well it is a known fact that squirrels spend most of their day in their dray after am feeding which can mean that the woods seem devoid of this little tasty creature so you need to call them, to expose them to be able to shoot them.

While squirrel calls are available commercially, I like to strike a coin against the butt plate of the gun, to imitate a bark and by striking two coins together, I can imitate feeding chatter.

Doctor’s practice, lawyers practice and so must you as hunting is a skill that must be practiced.

Wood Pigeon Shooting

As with squirrel hunting the most popular weapon used will be the air rifle and therefore we must maximise our chances of gaining some free tasty grub as failing to do so will lead to the land of groaning stomachs.

In my opinion there are only two ways to take wood pigeon with an air rifle (with the exception of the odd one sat on a fence or tree top) they are decoying and roost shooting.

Decoying

Woodpigeon decoying is the art of building a hide on a field where pigeons are feeding and using artificial or dead bird decoys to attract pigeons to within air rifle range (20 to 35 yards).

The sport requires considerable reconnaissance and much patience and field craft to achieve
results.

Hides may be built with camouflage nets, straw bales or natural cover. When using bales remember to ask the farmer’s permission to move them and always replace them after the shoot.

Natural hides are made with materials found on the farm and should be dismantled at the end of the shooting day.

Do not cut into hedgerows or otherwise damage the farmer’s property. The hide should be large enough (3ft. square) to accommodate the shooter, his dog and equipment, and have as level a floor as possible.

Roost shooting

For roost shooting Guns position themselves before dusk in woods where pigeons are known to roost during the winter and wait for the birds to return from their day’s feeding.

Mixed woods of conifers and hardwoods are the most popular and pigeon droppings under the trees will show the places to stand.

As it will be almost dark before the shoot ends fallen birds should be retrieved immediately.

Both of these methods will more that fill your game bag and provide many free tasty meals indeed.

Remember hunting is just that and to be successful you must employ all your senses and use nature to your advantage combined with your knowledge on your preys habits and your ability to be patient and when the time comes shoot straight.

The Vizshock X-20P Review

VizShock Personals are an everyday carry for anyone living in the city. Each VizShock Personal includes the following features making it an ideal self-defense device.

  • High Intensity White Beam

  • High Intensity Multi-Frequency Red and Blue Pulse Beam

  • Emergency Siren (X-20S & X-20P)

  • Portable Power Bank (X-20P)

  • Ergonomic Design

Its multi-frequency red and blue pulse allows you to pause and deter your assailant. It provides you with time to assess a situation and to better react while attracting needed attention. The optional emergency siren further enhances this effect. The emergency siren can be activated by pulling on a pin which itself can be clipped onto a wrist strap, phone strap, purse or tote bag.

Now this is an amazing personal protection item, probably one of the best I have seen.

Most personal alarm systems have the usual white strobe light, but the Vizshock tops them all.

The Vizshock uses a high Intensity Multi-Frequency Red and Blue Pulse Beam which disorientates your attacker and gives you the option of fight or flight.

When setting off this strobe I actually felt nauseas being behind it and can only imagine what it must be like for the attacker, but who cares anyway.

Others who also tried it at the WG felt the same way.

But that’s not all, it is also has a high intensity white beam has an emergency siren and believe it or not it’s a USB power bank too, now beat that. You can order yours here:

My Survival Fishing Kit

Many commercial survival kits contain a few small hooks, tiny, weights, and a short length of lightweight fishing line.

With some live bait an amateur could use that miniature fishing kit to catch a few small fish for food.

However, small fish contain very little meat and it would take many of them to make a meal.

There will be many setbacks, such as broken lines and lost hooks. A tiny fishing kit of this type might help catch a few small fish, but it isn’t going to do much good in a real survival situation.

Further, most would not know how to use that gear to catch fish when live bait is unavailable.

I love fishing and I wanted to design a survivalfishing kit for myself, a kit I could have fun with as well as a kit capable of providing fresh food in a survival situation.

It stands to reason that commercial fishing line will be far better than any fishing line I could make in a true survival situation.

Generally speaking, a half-mile of commercial fishing line weighs only about one-quarter of a pound, can be contained on a spool the size of a human fist, and costs less than a typical fast-food lunch.

With the internet and a little surfing you can source cheap line in fact some is free if you pay shipping.

For me it is simply a must-have item for fishing kit.

Fishing line is available in many different strengths and styles. For example, a hooked quarter-pound fish tugging on a small 6-pound test monofilament line will probably not cause it to break, but the line will likely snap if you have hooked a twenty-pound fish.

Abrasion from jagged rocks and underwater obstructions will also weaken a fishing line, as will fishing in extremely cold water.

Having a stronger fishing line than you expect to need is the key, but smaller fish can become “spooked” by a strong large-diameter fishing line. A fluorocarbon line can overcome this problem as it is nearly invisible in the water, but small-diameter fluorocarbon lines can still break when big fish are hooked.

In a survival situation a person would want to catch fish of all sizes so a versatile line is needed.

Chosing the best all-purpose survival fishing line is a matter of personal opinion, but I would recommend a braided line which generally has 3-5 times the breaking strength of a monofilament or fluorocarbon line.

For example, a braided line having a 50-pound breaking strength can have a line diameter equivalent to a 10-pound monofilament or fluorocarbon line. Even with mild abrasion damage, such a strong braided line would continue to be useful for fishing as opposed to most lightweight monofilament or fluorocarbon fishing line of equal diameter.

Remember the weakest link in the set up is at the knot which ties the line to the hook, a fact which is especially true for braided lines.

I suggest having pre tied hooks to line with you, it’s a lot easier than than trying to do this with freezing cold fingers.

Fishing hooks can be crafted by hand from wire, wood, or bone with unpredictable results, but off-the-shelf hooks are far superior in strength, sharpness, design, and function.

Plenty of straight hooks in small and large sizes as well as medium-sized treble hooks are also must-have items for survival fishing kits. Both modern-day fishing line and hooks are so useful, effective, dependable, and affordable it makes little sense to be without them and try to make your own.

From a minimalist perspective strong fishing line and hooks are the two primary items in my fishing kit and I would be content just having that. However, I can greatly improve my kit without adding much bulk by including the following:

Multi-tool containing pliers and a single-edge knife blade (for hook removal, scaling/cleaning fish, and crafting artificial lures)

Container with lid (such as a small tin or margarine tub, used to contain the miscellaneous hardware noted below, also useful to hold live bait when needed)

Many large and small paper clips, safety pins, rubber bands; as well as a few strong finishing nails (miscellaneous useful hardware)

A small pack which will be useful for storing the entire fishing kit

Of course, a telescoping fishing rod and a reel can be useful too, but they are bulky and can break fairly easily.

I have the Pen Fishing Rod and Reel which I really love to fish with.

Other fishing kits usea s mall hand-held stick (or dowel rod) so the line can be retrieved by hand in the same way as when flying a kite.

I also have a small assortment of plastic baits, spinning lures, but don’t go overboard as the kit should be as compact as possible.

There are many ways to catch fish using hooks and line, one of which involves live bait.

Anything can be used as bait: worms, crickets, various bugs of all types, as well as pieces of raw meat. Small fish can be used as bait to catch larger fish.

Food such as fruit, bread, and kernels of corn can attract fish. Simply attach the bait to a hook which is tied to a line and cast the baited hook into the water.

Don’t expect instant results as several hours might pass before you catch a fish, if at all.

Use a short length of nylon cord to retain captured fish by feeding one end of it into the mouth of the fish and working it out through the gills. Allow the captured fish to remain in the water while securing both ends of the nylon cord on the shoreline so the fish do not swim away.

If weight is needed to keep the bait on the bottom of the water then rocks can come in handy for this purpose.

Using a separate three-foot strand of nylon cord, repeatedly wrap and tie the rock into a cocoon of sorts which can easily be tied to a baited fishing line.

I do not use floats as are not usually needed to catch fish, but when necessary they can be fashioned from nearly any piece of buoyant material.

The small paper clips and safety pins can help serve as attachment points for weights and floats while the large paper clips can be used to create artificial lures.

There are two main types of artificial lures we can easily craft using common and natural materials. One is a weighted jig we can bounce on the bottom of the lake to imitate the actions of a frog or small fish.

A lure is not live bait, but with some practice we can convince predatory fish that it is alive.

Using a large straight hook and a rubber band, tightly bind a pea-sized rock near the eye of the hook. Within the many folds of that same rubber band attach several 2″ pieces of nylon cord and fray the ends to create multiple separate strands of loose fiber.

These loose string tips will mimic hair or phalanges and add a bit of realism to our artificial lure when it is in the water.

Attach the lure to the fishing line, cast it into the water a fair distance from shore, and allow it to descend to the bottom.

Lightly tug on the fishing line every few seconds so the jig rises up from the bottom about 6-12″ and then allow it to fall back to the bottom again. Repeat this fairly slow process until you have fully retrieved the lure, then cast it back out into the water and repeat the retrieval process again.

During the retrieval process, keep your eye focused on the fishing line at the point where it touches the surface of the water.

If the fishing line appears to be moving quickly in an unexpected direction chances are you have hooked a fish, so tug hard on the line to set the hook.

A jig is especially effective in places having lily pads or lots of underwater grass where larger fish might be hiding.

From my own personal experience using this technique, I have hooked several fish in 24 inches of water or less with some hooks being set when the jig was a few inches from the shoreline.

Another type of artificial lure we can craft is a plug which appears to swim in the water rather than bounce on the bottom. Slide a treble hook onto a large paper clip, tightly wrap a rubber band around the paper clip several times so the hook won’t slide off, and fasten the other end of the paper clip to the fishing line. Although small and very simple in appearance, fish can be enticed to believe this lure would make a good snack. Additional bulk material and weight can be added as desired.

Just about anything can serve as a plug, even an old metal bottle cap. In that example, fold the bottle cap in half using pliers (printed side out), use the nail with a “rock as a hammer” to create a hole on each pointed end of the folded cap, affix one end to a treble hook while the other end is tied to the fishing line. This kind of lure works better in streams and rivers as the moving water will help keep the lure in a near-constant swimming motion which can attract fish.

This simple fishing kit can offer numerous other fishing possibilities, especially when combined with objects found in our surroundings.

Having so many hooks, strong line, and nylon cord you could also create a trot line having many baited hooks. Bait a dozen hooks, tie them to 12-inch lengths of fishing line, and tie each of those pieces of fishing line to a 15-foot length of nylon cord at one-foot intervals. Secured in the water using a stake at each end, a nylon cord trot line can capture multiple fish even when it is left unattended for several hours. (NB illegal in the UK)

A decent and useful survival fishing kit need not be large or expensive, but it should be better than one which can fit inside the handle of a survival knife.

The h2gO Purifier Review

This H2gO Purifier weighs only 3.8 ounces (108 grams), fits in your pocket, and is very simple and easy to use.

It will treat anywhere from 1 liter (1 quart)up to 20 liters (5 gallons) of water with just a couple button clicks. It automatically calculates the correct dose for the volume selected, so there is no dosing to calculate.

It keeps stored water safe to drink with a lifetime capacity of 60,000 to 124,000+ liters (24,000 to 32,000+ gallons), depending on the model selected.

It is inexpensive to purchase and virtually free to operate, with no maintenance, no spare parts, and no consumables (other than common salt), making it truly sustainable.

The H2gO Purifier uses a small amount of electricity to convert salt into a chlorine and hydrogen peroxide disinfectant solution.

The combination of chlorine and hydrogen peroxide is more effective than chlorine alone. Although this device is not a filter, it will kill all varieties of microorganisms, even in water that is cloudy.

If you’ve ever purified water on a camping trip, traveled internationally where the water is known to be unsafe, been worried about a natural disaster, or seen how people live in emerging countries, then you know that there are a lot of water treatment options out there that will do the job, but they all have their limitations – lots of pumping, potential to clog, expensive, small treatment volumes, bad-tasting water, too much effort, uncertain results, etc. That’s why we designed H2gO.

Easy. The H2gO Purifier can generate disinfectant within minutes with just a couple clicks of a button to treat anywhere from 1 liter up to 20 liters (¼ gallon to 5 gallons) at a time. There is no maintenance or cleaning required.

Economical. Depending on the model selected, this device will treat over 60,000 to 124,000 liters (16,000 to 32,000 gallons) of water for an inexpensive purchase price and no operational cost.

Sustainable. There is no ongoing cost, no consumables (other than common salt), no battery replacement, and no resupply logistics. The H2gO Purifier includes an integrated solar panel, offering peace of mind in case there is no access to electricity.

Compact. It is the smallest and lightest personal purifier on the market at 108 grams (3.8 ounces), about 1/4 the weight of a microfilter and 1/5 the size, even with the integrated solar panel, two salt storage chambers, and an LED flashlight.

Effective. The H2gO Purifier kills all classes of organisms – viruses, bacteria, and Giardia in 30 minutes and Cryptosporidium in 4 hours when dosed per instructions.

Durable. The H2gO Purifier was designed to meet military specifications. It can survive a 2-meter (6-foot) drop, freeze/thaw cycles, and is waterproof up to 18 meters (60 feet).

Versatile. The H2gO Purifier can be used for small or large quantities, short or long trips, individuals or groups, and clear water or cloudy. It has neat extras like a built-in flashlight.

Needless to say, I love it, and more reviews will follow. I love it so much I wanted to tell you all about it before my review and get you excited with the product from the off.

First planned biological bomb attack on Germany confirmed

Alarm bells are ringing in Germany after security officials learned more about a Tunisian’s efforts to create ricin and use the deadly substance for a terrorist attack.

German authorities have now confirmed what many feared: The 29-year-old Tunisian man arrested last week in Cologne was creating a deadly biological weapon he intended to use for a terrorist attack somewhere in the country. Where exactly is still unknown, and is one of several issues still being scrutinized by investigators.

“There were very concrete preparations for such an act using, if you will, a biological bomb,” Holger Münch, president of Germany’s Federal Criminal Police Office, the BKA, told public broadcaster RBB. “This is a first in Germany.”

Various Islamist groups, Mr. Münch noted, have published instructions on the internet on how to make biological weapons from the deadly toxin ricin. “Obviously, this person was following these (instructions),” he said.

Sief Allah H., whose last name wasn’t revealed in line with German privacy laws, had already begun to produce ricin from castor seeds, according to Mr. Münch. The seeds and components required to build an explosive device were also found in his apartment.

Potential targets still unclear

The seeds of the castor bean plant are naturally poisonous and can be used to create ricin. The substance kills the body’s cells by preventing them from creating vital protein. It is far deadlier than cyanide, with no antidote; just a few milligrams are enough to kill a person when injected, inhaled or swallowed.

As early as World World I, the United States tested ricin as a potential weapon, mixed together with ammunition or spread as a dust, but never deployed it. The substance is still subject to global biological and chemical weapons conventions.

The BKA, the German equivalent to the US Federal Bureau of Investigation, or FBI, confirmed it had received information from a foreign security partner about a man ordering a potentially dangerous substance on the internet – 3,000 castor seeds. The Bild newspaper, citing an inside source, claims American security officials tipped off German investigators. Following the thwarted plot, Mr. Münch said he is considering whether to increase the domestic and international monitoring of biological weapons.
