Nuclear War Threat Has Not Gone Away

The risk of nuclear weapons being used is at its highest since World War Two, a senior U.N. security expert said on Tuesday.

Renata Dwan, director of the U.N. Institute for Disarmament Research, said the threat of nuclear war is an ‘urgent’ issue that the world needs to take more seriously.

Despite the fact that 122 nations have signed a treaty to ban the weapons, she said, all countries with nuclear arms are currently updating their stockpiles.

Meanwhile arms control treaties are also being torn up – such as the Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces Treaty which was signed at the height of the Cold War but torn up by the Trump White House earlier this year.

Increased competition between superpowers such as China and the US is also driving up the risk of nuclear conflict, she said.

Traditional arms control arrangements are also being eroded by the emergence of new types of war.

The increasing prevalence of armed groups and private sector forces, and new technologies that blur the line between offence and defence, are contributing to the problem, she told reporters in Geneva.

‘I think that it´s genuinely a call to recognise – and this has been somewhat missing in the media coverage of the issues – that the risks of nuclear war are particularly high now, and the risks of the use of nuclear weapons, for some of the factors I pointed out, are higher now than at any time since World War Two,’ she said.

The nuclear ban treaty, officially called the Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, was backed by the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), which won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2017.

The treaty has so far gathered 23 of the 50 ratifications that it needs to come into force, including South Africa, Austria, Thailand, Vietnam and Mexico.

However, it is strongly opposed by the United States, Russia, and other states with nuclear arms.

Dwan said the world should not ignore the danger of nuclear weapons.

‘How we think about that, and how we act on that risk and the management of that risk, seems to me a pretty significant and urgent question that isn’t reflected fully in the (U.N.) Security Council,’ she said.

Let’s hope she is wrong, but what if she is not?

Signal Crayfish Free Fresh Water Food

Crayfish are freshwater crustaceans related to lobsters, and there are two main species in UK – the native white-clawed crayfish and the non-native American signal crayfish, which was introduced to Britain in the 1970s via crayfish farms, and subsequently escaped.

There are a few other introduced species of crayfish, but they are not very widespread. They are called signal crayfish because the underside of their claws is bright red, making them easy to identify.

Signal crayfish can be up to 25cm long with claws extended. If you’re not sure whether what you’re looking at is a signal crayfish or a native crayfish, look for the red claws – a sure sign that you’re looking at a signal crayfish.

Trapping crayfish for food in the UK only involves the signal
crayfish.

The native crayfish is now becoming rare and it is illegal to touch.

By the way ALL signal crayfish once removed from a water source must be killed, it is illegal to return it whatever its size.

They live on the beds of streams and rivers and are carnivorous, eating mainly dead creatures, but they can decimate natural and stocked fish numbers by eating their eggs.

The signal crayfish can walk overland to establish itself in new waterways, and is now widespread throughout Britain.

What are the benefits of eating Crayfish?

First – getting food from the wild is always a good idea from an environmental perspective (unless we deplete the resource – but this isn’t an issue here, as we’ll see later).

Wild food requires no pesticides, fertilisers, hormones or genetic modification – in fact, no ecological interference at all.

The second benefit is in reducing their numbers.

The American crayfish is causing problems for both the native crayfish and for British Waterways.

Signal crayfish outcompete native crayfish because they are bigger, their eggs hatch earlier in the year, females lay up to 500 eggs (the native crayfish lays around 200), and they are less fussy about what they eat.

Also, the signal crayfish carries a fungal disease (commonly called the crayfish plague) that kills the native crayfish (it’s not at all harmful to humans though).

Also, American crayfish burrow into the banks of rivers and streams to build their homes, causing erosion of the river banks.

Oh I nearly forgot they taste great

So what can you do?

Firstly you need a licence to keep crayfish in this country – see the DEFRA website – in case they escape into the wild. If you’re thinking of farming crayfish, ponds now have to be indoors and escape-proof.

However I assume that you’re not going to keep them, you’re just going to catch them from the wild.

Don’t put any crayfish you’ve caught into ponds or other bodies of water temporarily, as they could escape and colonise an area that
doesn’t have them, it is also illegal to do so.

Tapping crayfish

There are bylaws covering the trapping of crayfish, and what you can do depends on local circumstances – especially if there are native crayfish in your area.

Contact the Environment Agency to ask about your local circumstances, or you can get a crayfish trapping advice pack from the National Fisheries Laboratory on 01480 483968.

You will need Environment Agency tags on your trap for it to be legal.

The Environment Agency’s concerns are that if people are allowed to catch crayfish for food, they will be sold to the restaurant trade, and because there is money to be made, some people might ‘seed’ rivers and streams that don’t have signal crayfish, so that they can be harvested in the
future.

I share this concern, so I would encourage people never to buy or sell crayfish, but to trap them just for their own consumption.

Trapping crayfish is a summer activity, of course.

In winter, they will be hibernating in the river banks.

The trap shouldn’t have an entrance of more than 95mm, because if there are otters in the area, they could get caught.

Bait the trap with something tasty for crayfish (chicken livers), plus a brick to weigh it down, then put it into a stream you suspect has crayfish.

Check the next day.

Anything other than signal crayfish, let go, and don’t leave a trap in a watercourse for more than 24 hours, in case something other than a crayfish gets trapped in it.

Let any native crayfish go if you’ve caught any. But if you catch small signal crayfish, don’t put them back (in fact it is illegal to put them back, once caught as I have said).

Signal crayfish are cannibals, and if you remove only big ones, there will be nothing to keep the numbers of small ones down.

The Signal crayfish is delicious and not too far from the taste of lobster. If you do want to ensure you have the best possible culinary experience, we really recommend leaving the crayfish to “purge” for 24 hours before being consumed.

As you can imagine, when they spend their lives in the river-bed feeding on all sorts they can accumulate some dirt and grit, so leaving them in a bucket of clean water for a period of time should allow them time to expel any waste products. That’s not to say they wouldn’t still be delicious fresh from the river!

Cooking Crayfish

Boil a large pan of water and tip them in – they are killed instantly.

Simmer for around 3 minutes, then turn off the heat and leave in the water for another 2 minutes.

They turn pink when they are cooked, and look like mini-lobsters (which they are).

The edible parts are the tail and the meat in the claws.

Pull and separate the head and tail. Pull off the legs, and then grab the end of the flesh sticking out of the tail casing and pull.
Sometimes there will be pink eggs – you can eat those too.

Homemade Cheese

What you will need

4 litres of whole milk, 1 pinch salt, 1 large lemon, juiced

What to do

Pour the milk into a large pan, and stir in a pinch of salt.

Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally to prevent the milk from scorching on the bottom of the pan.

When the milk begins to boil turn the heat off then stir the lemon juice into the milk, the milk will then curdle.

This may take 5 to 10 minutes.

Line a sieve with a cheesecloth, now pour the milk through the cloth to catch the curds.

What is left in the cheesecloth is the Farmer’s Cheese.

The liquid is the whey.

Gather the cloth around the cheese, and squeeze out as much of the whey as you can.

Then I find it best to suspend the cheese cloth over the sink for example.

When it has stopped dripping, I put it in an airtight container and put it in the fridge.

Why not try using herbs or other flavourings.

Could you live the Prepper Lifestyle?

Living a prepper lifestyle is not only good for preparing for the future, but it’s a great way to live a less stressful life. Many people get tired of the rat race and long for something more calming.

A few give up their suburban lives and head for remote locations. That’s not what being a prepper is about.

Being a prepper is not about pulling yourself away from society and living like a hermit.

It’s simply living a life that doesn’t rely on the others to see you through a short term or long term disaster. While being a prepper is a great way to live, it’s really not for everyone.

So how can you tell who’s a good fit and who will absolutely hate living the life of a prepper? First, living the prepper lifestyle takes a complete commitment. The life is not for you if you think you want to dabble in it and see how it goes.

You’re either into it, or you’re not. If you’re ready to give up the way you’ve been living until now, and you’re ready to break free of the capitalistic mentality taught by society, then the lifestyle is for you.

If you know that you’re ready to walk away from being dependent on others for your needs, then this is for you. You have to believe that what you’re gaining is a better life for yourself and your family.

If you know that you’re ready to get organized and are committed to building your short term and long term list of goods and supplies, then the prepper lifestyle is something you’d find to be a good fit.

Being ready to become totally self-sufficient is a good clue that you’re ready for a life change. If you’re ready to learn about self-protection and first aid and how to take care of yourself and your family through anything, then you’re ready.

Being a prepper is not about living to the extreme the way the wacky survivalists you see portrayed on television live. It means you accept that there are things outside your control that could impact your life greatly, such as disasters, government collapse, etc. – and you want to be ready for whatever comes.

That’s when you know you’re ready for the prepper lifestyle. But not everyone who thinks they are, actually is ready.

If you’re in a relationship and your partner is dead-set against it, hates it, wants no part of it, you’re not ready if you don’t want to risk ruining the relationship.

You’re not ready if there are certain things in your life that you feel you absolutely can’t give up – such as a daily trip to the local pub or that expensive cup of coffee.

You’re not ready and the lifestyle is not for you if you set aside money for supplies but then spend it on going out to eat or shopping for a new pair of shoes or the latest video game.

You’re not ready if you have a deep attachment to the conveniences of life and rely too heavily on technology. You can’t imagine your life without modern technology is a sign you’re not ready.

If you have an unwillingness to learn how to prepare for the future or aren’t interested in sustainable living, then you’re not ready for the prepper lifestyle.

But most people can I think see a day when the worst case scenario happens, and if it happens to you, you’ll have to deal with it – ready or not.

Organizing your every Day Carry

Having a proper every day carry (EDC) setup is one of the most important things you can do to be prepared, well, every day.

While you can get separated from your bug out bag and might not be able to get home quickly, your everyday carry is always on you to help you survive and get things done.

I have covered some basics on the best every day carry setup before, but that’s really only useful if you’re starting from scratch.

If you just want to fine-tune your EDC however, there isn’t a lot out there to help. Lucky for you, I have compiled a list of five ways to fine-tune your EDC setup so it’s more useful and always at hand.

When starting out with every day carry items, it’s common to start with things that go in your pockets. This is great until you run out of room and your EDC makes you uncomfortable.

Once you’ve got some EDC experience, try moving to other locations on your body for keeping items. The most common upgrade is moving to your belt.

By keeping your knife or multi-tool on your belt along with other small items, you can free up space in your pockets while keeping everything you need on you.

You don’t have to go crazy here and have a belt that would rival an SAS Trooper, but simply keeping your knife, fire starter, and multi tool on your belt can give you a lot more space than you had before. Moving past your belt, think about your trousers and shirts with additional pockets that can hold items, too. By spreading your EDC out over your entire body, you ease the burden and make it far more comfortable.

Weight vs. Usefulness

If you’ve had an EDC setup for some time now you probably realize that not everything that you think is vitally important really is. It’s easy to go overboard and fill your pockets with things you MIGHT use at some point.

If you’re feeling weighed down by your EDC it might be time to take inventory of what you’re carrying and see if the weight of each item is really worth it.

For example, you might carry a small water filter straw with you in a cargo pocket, but you could lighten the load by using a small pill container with some water purification tablets in it.

Another weight-saving idea is the use of a small LED light instead of a standard torch/flashlight.

While the torch/flashlight is better, the keychain light can free up space for other more important items.

KISS

If you only follow one tip in this list, make it this one. KISS stands for Keep It Simple, Stupid. Don’t overthink your EDC setup by trying to plan for every possible scenario. Your EDC is meant to give you a leg up on everyone else, not to be a mini bug out bag.

Keep things simple and don’t stress out about it. Keep the essentials like a source of fire, a knife, a multi-tool, watch, and a weapon if you’re able to.

Beyond this just include items that make you feel safe and comfortable without trying to plan out scenarios. Trust me, even the most basic EDC setup is far more than the average person has.

Less is Sometimes More

Having an elaborate every day carry setup is great, until it’s so elaborate that you stop using it. The idea of an EDC is to have it with you every day.

If it takes 15 minutes to load yourself up chances are you’ll leave the house from time to time without it, and that’s not good at all.

It’s often better to have less items with you that you carry all the time than a lot of items that you only carry every now and then.

Think about what you need and ask yourself what would happen if the SHTF and you didn’t have the item in question? Would it make a difference? If not, ditch it and free that space up for something else.

The less items you have the less chance you have at forgetting something or losing something, and that means the pieces you do use are more valuable and overall better.

Trial and Error

Finally, don’t be afraid to change things. I have talked about changing your EDC for colder weather, but you can make changes to it every day if that suits you.

Try items out and if they don’t work, ditch them and find something new. Don’t put up with pieces in your EDC that you’re not in love with.

These are things you have with you 24/7, so you better love them or else you’ll hate carrying them.

Try a few setups out to see how they work and if you like them or not. Try your knife in a front pocket, back pocket, belt…try it all.

You won’t know what you really like unless you try a few different ways.

Avoiding Civil Unrest

Civil Unrest has occurred in pockets across the country over the past few years and is perhaps
one of the more likely scenarios that could adversely affect us in the future.

It’s possible that we could see more protests and riots like those organized in Ferguson, here in the UK.

We only have to look back to the Mark Dugon incident. Other widespread civil unrest could be caused by financial inequities or collapse, food shortages, loss of confidence in government, or storms that leave people homeless, and lets not forget Brexit.

Or at least that is our perception, I however am aware of under hand police tactics used to infiltrate groups of peaceful protesters and stepping the level of protest up to and including violence, therefore justifying the police taking action to disperse what was planned to be a peaceful law abiding protest, and in fact was until the police arrived..

Of course there is always the chance of peaceful protests turning violent because of outside agitators that flock to any event where they think they can run amok.

These anarchists are the cause of much of the violence we see on TV at what would otherwise be peaceful protests.

While civil unrest is something that can strike any part of the country it is perhaps the most
straightforward to avoid.

In the past we have seen civil unrest in large or even medium sized cities but it has not spread to the suburbs.

On a few occasions there may have been minor fights between picketers in small towns but nothing like we saw in London or the Bradford riots.

So how exactly do you avoid getting swept up in any type of civil unrest?

Having lived in Northern Ireland during the height of the troubles I can say that I have seen
many street riots but avoided many, many more by simply staying away from their location, going around it or putting of travelling that day until things had calmed down.

Remember in an emergency, population density is your enemy.

Secondly, keep an eye on the local and national news.

Civil unrest occurs most commonly from a planned protest or event.

If you hear there will be picketing, protests, or even a “peaceful march” in a particular location you should avoid those areas completely.

If you were planning on going into the city for a business meeting or to shop simply reschedule it
for another day or better location outside the city.

Simply staying away from locations that are likely to flare up with protests is not difficult.

Avoiding flash flooding for example that’s bearing down on you is much tougher to do…

If for some reason you find yourself in a place that is quickly becoming a hot spot you should
leave the area immediately and by any means possible.

If that means leaving a car behind and walking out to a safer spot then that may be the way
to go.

Don’t think that vehicle glass offers you any kind of defence.
A heavy tool or large rock makes quick work of it.

There is always the possibility that civil unrest could become more widespread than it has in the
past.

If that is the case you should have plans in place to fortify your home I recommend using the plywood you should have stored in your garage and covering up any vulnerable windows.

The use of firearms in a situation like this is something that needs to be carefully considered and researched.

As any use of “weapons” is your choice and you will have to justify your actions at a later date.

Personally I would rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

So, while there are many disaster scenarios that we can do very little to avoid (although we can
still prep and plan for them) civil unrest is one situation that with good situational awareness we can avoid altogether.

A Family Plan

What you do, or do not do, is down to have you got a plan or not.

You are driving home and the fuel lights come on, what do you do now? Fill up now or in the morning on the way to work?

But what if?

So you did fill up and drove home you wife was still out working you put the meal into the oven and jumped into the bath.

Then complete darkness, a power cut, what is your plan now?

Where is your wife? Is she OK, is she trapped underground on a tube train?

Is she in a massive traffic jam as the traffic lights are not working? Oh! And the mobile phone network is down too.

I am sure something similar has happened to many people across the world, and the problem with these disasters both natural and man-made is that they are unpredictable.

We know that they have happened so therefore we expect they will happen again, however we do not know when or how bad they will be or in fact where they will be.

In the U.S. September is National Preparedness Month, We could do with one in the UK to be honest as it would as it would remind people that they should be planning for power cuts
and disasters themselves and not be relying on the Government for their existence when these events occur.

Unlike the U.S. the UK has yet to totally embrace the preppers and survivalist mind set, although I have to say things are changing, and more and more people are waking up to the fact that if they do not plan to survive such events then they will not survive it is that simple.

How to… Practice for an Emergency

Planning to survive is not as easy as it sounds unfortunately, I bet that the majority of people in the UK have not even discussed let alone developed an emergency plan for family members detailing what to do and how to reunite in the event of a disaster.

Think back to the earlier scenario…how would your reach your wife?

Do the two of you have a designated meeting place or perhaps a point of contact outside of your immediate community who can assist with connecting the two of you and confirming both parties are safe?

Connecting, having and practising an emergency plan and being within arms’ reach of emergency supplies are all small, simple steps we can take today.

And, frankly, they could mean the difference between life and death once a disaster strikes.

But no reminder, activity or promotion will be as meaningful and as impactful as the one you take for your own life and for that of your family.

This also means thinking beyond what’s immediately obvious and planning for those who may not be able to prepare or readily plan for themselves – like those who are disabled, the elderly and don’t forget your pets.


How to Stop Bleeding With Black Pepper

When it comes to survival and wilderness first aid, I highly recommend you carry a blood clotting agent with you in your first aid kit, personally I believe that CELOX produce the best consumer available blood clotting agent, as unlike many other brands, CELOX is also effective for people
on blood thinners such as heparin and warfarin etc.

You can purchase CELOX fromAmazon. It is quite expensive, but simply put – it could save your life one day…

If you do not have a clotting agent such as CELOX, you can in fact use simple ground black pepper to stop bleeding quickly for small to medium sized cuts/wounds.

Black pepper is naturally antibacterial and makes blood coagulate quickly and stops bleeding.

Black pepper was commonly used by soldiers in the Second World War, and even today it is often used in professional kitchens (probably due to its availability) to stop cuts from bleeding.

It couldn’t be simpler to use black pepper to stop bleeding – simply pour a generous amount of ground black pepper onto the wound and apply pressure (and bandage if necessary) and it should quickly stop bleeding (please use common sense though as serious cuts may still require the attention of a doctor).

Note: Finely ground black pepper works best, and no, black pepper does not sting when put on a cut!

Personally I keep some Black Pepper in my first aid kits for emergencies, and for day-to-day and around the home, black pepper is a useful alternative for smaller wounds.

By the way I am not a medical expert, this information is based on my own experience and research.

Please do your own research and exercise common sense before trying this.
